Strength Through Collaboration – Experiencing it! When attending a conference I always ask myself, Why should I attend?
In addition to the opportunity of meeting face to face with colleagues that I interface with on the web in team meetings all year long, a couple of benefits cross my mind. One is to learn something new in the field and the other to get insights on some topics through other’s knowledge and experiences. The sharing of new information, knowledge and experience is a by-product of collaboration, a very important aspect of improving our field. With these benefits in mind, it is my sincere hope that the 2014 CDISC International Interchange, in particular Session 6, met similar goals for those of you that were able to join us. For those of you who were not able to join us, I hope this article can be used to entice interest in the topics presented.
Session 6 of the 2014 CDISC International Interchange was about “CDISC Related PhUSE Projects.” We had a group of contributors on different projects undertaken by the PhUSE / FDA-CS Working Groups (PhUSE / FDA-CS WGs) that provided summaries of their work to date. These presentations offered a tangible explanation of the ongoing collaboration among individuals from multiple organizations. The presenters expressed how all these projects contribute toward the implementation of CDISC and Semantic Web related standards aiming to improve Semantic Interoperability to support the clinical and non-clinical life cycle from protocol to submission.
At this conference, and at my day-to-day contribution to CDISC and PhUSE-FDA/CS WG Teams, I have had the opportunity to directly experience the enthusiasm that many of these collaborative efforts are generating, and I greatly anticipate the day that I will see much of this work implemented in a production case scenario, as Version 1 and soon after that moving to Version 2, plus future improvements.
You may ask Why another standard? When is this going to stop? … I think the answers are ingrained in the fact that technology and standards continuously evolve over time and, as per this year’s conference theme, we are Embracing a Changing Landscape - and the changing part is here to stay!
Below, I describe the talks in a different order from which they were presented for two reasons. Firstly, to help visualize where they fit into the end-to-end framework from protocol to submission, and
