THE BIRTH OF FLIGHT On Saturday, December 17, 2017, The Southern Museum of Flight celebrateed the anniversary of powered flight with a ceremony that included the rededication of the Early Aviation Hangar, honoring two Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award recipients, and unveiling and dedicating a bust of Charles Taylor to the museum. Saturday, December 17, 2017,


marked the 113th anniversary of powered flight in America. The Southern Museum of Flight in Birmingham, AL celebrated the anniversary with a special public ceremony that included family, friends, museum staff, board members, and representatives from the FAA. The evening began with a welcome reception, followed by opening remarks from the M.C., Dr. Brian Barsanti, executive director of the museum. Wayne Novy, curator of the museum, provided a presentation to educate the attendees about the exhibits and updates that were included in the Early Aviation Hangar. The program also included two special segments. The first was to honor and award the FAA Safety Team “Charles E. Taylor Master Mechanic Award” to two recipients: Mr. George Colbow, of Vinemont,

AL, and Mr. John Hardy, of Odenville, AL. The attendees acknowledged and celebrated their 50 years of service to the aviation maintenance profession. The awards were presented by Marlin Priest, FAASTEAM Representative. The wives of the recipients were also recognized with the awarding of the matching lapel pin. The second was to unveil and dedicate a bronze bust of Charles E. Taylor to the museum. The bust was placed in memory of Mr. Charles E. Barrett, the first recipient of the Charles Taylor award in the State of Alabama, and in honor of all Charles Taylor award recipients from the State of Alabama. The family of Mr. Barrett was recognized and honored. The two award recipients assisted with the unveiling of the bust. The bust will be placed in the Early Aviation Hangar, near the full scale replica of the 1903 Wright Flyer, along with early aviation artifacts and documents. The evening concluded with a


ribbon cutting and social inside the Early Aviation Hangar of the museum.
