was a junior at the University of Southern California when she began fl ying lessons in J2 Piper Cubs at Mines Field, now the location for Los Angeles International Airport. While working on her BS degree in Physical Sciences and Mathematics she also earned her Private Pilot Certifi cate and completed the CAA Advanced Acrobatic Courses and all the CAA Ground Instructor Ratings. After graduation in 1941, Iris taught in the Civil Pilot Training Program in California and by 1942 for the Navy Cadet Program in Carson City, Nevada. After the onset of WWII, Iris was to spend more time in the air than in the water or in a classroom.

In December 1942, Iris reported for training in the Army Air Corps in Houston,Texas and was assigned to the WAFS. She was 22 years old. For the next two years she served as a civilian ferry pilot with the Army Air Corps, Air Transport Command, 6th Ferrying Group at Long Beach, CA. Among the twenty-fi ve types of military aircraft she ferried as pilot in command were the P-47 Thunderbolt, P-40 Warhawk, P-39 AirCobra, P-51 Mustang, C-47 Transport, B-25 Mitchell, A-20 Havoc, P-38 Lightning and the P-61 Black Widow. It was with these remarkable credentials that Iris

continued her teaching career which some deem her greatest contribution to aeronautics.

TEACHER AND MENTOR In 1944 Iris married Howard Critchell with whom she shared a love of fl ying. They were to raise a family and work together for decades. After WWII, Iris returned to teaching aeronautics at USC College of Aeronautics in Santa Maria, CA which included instrument fl ight training in Vultee BT Trainers. She also entered the annual All Women Transcontinental Air Race (also known as the “Powder Puff Derby”) fi fteen times, winning the race twice and placing in the top ten an additional seven times.
