Honesty – admitting your mistakes when their eff ect is apparent. Humility – sharing the mistakes you
have made along the way to lessen their feelings of their own mistakes. It’s one thing to console another
person with the trite phrase “we all make mistakes” and pass it off as if it were nothing. It’s a totally diff erent eff ect when you admit one of your mistakes, how devastating it was to you at the time, the outcome and your lessons learned. Honesty – giving credit where
credit is due. Humility – you did not or could not do it alone
Honesty is including the work
done by others to reach your goal. You can say “John and Mary both contributed” or “Sally provided the framework”. Humility is clearly
highlighting the importance of the contribution of others – and your success is because of them. “Tom kept us all in line – without him we would not have met our deadline.” Honesty – admitting what you do not know, whether it’s in response to a technical question or an upcoming organizational change, without coming across as bitter, sarcastic or apathetic. Humility – accepting that you do
not have all the answers and asking others for help is not a weakness or a sign of low self-confi dence. To admit that you do not have
the answers – whether it is because you have not been told or you have not experienced the situation – and not feel insecure or embarrassed, takes a person with strong character. Relying on the experience of others to discover another way, perhaps

ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE Honesty and humility must be perceived as genuine; if not, they quickly become chinks in your character. These chinks quickly erode trust. Little trust between you and your direct reports can result in safety infractions, a decrease in effi ciency and apathetic sloppiness. What can you do? 1. At least weekly, perform a self- assessment. You assess on a regular basis for your equipment and even for your direct reports, why not do it on yourself? Look at the deep-seated reasons why you made the decisions you did, and if they adhered to the high level of character you believe you have.
