the AMC is for the competitiveness, the edge it gives us,” Indian Hills’ Dunkin says. “It gives us good exposure, but also adds credence to the fact that we say we produce quality technicians, and we’re willing to step up and prove it.” The event attracts about 250 technicians from around the world, including about 20 female AMTs like Karrie Peterson. An aircraft mechanic
with more than 18 years of experience, Peterson says it was great for industry veterans to meet and interact with the next generation of technicians.
“The competition was a blast,” says
Peterson, an AMT with Southwest Airlines. “It was really good to have students coming in and see just how knowledgeable they are … and they were keeping up with us.” Making the leap into aviation
was a natural choice for Peterson, as her dad owned a cargo company with a fl eet of 10 DC-3s. She was encouraged to see the large number of women, especially those in college, participating in the AMC. “No matter what the goal is for
any woman in a maintenance fi eld, it can be accomplished. There’s nothing holding them back anymore,” she says. “Through the years I’ve seen many women just give up on maintenance. It’s going to be hard, but the career is

worth it. Just don’t give up.” Lesher, who attended the AMC
three years ago as part of an all-female team from South Seattle Community College, said the experience helped validate her decision that aviation maintenance was the right choice for her — and that it can be for many other women as well. “I left the AMC feeling I still had a lot to learn, but the experience energized me to know that I was on the right career track,” she says. “It’s a really interesting job; don’t be intimidated by any of it. If a woman is interested in airplanes and enjoys a job that’s physically active, yet mentally challenging, it’s a great way to go.” The AMC presented by Snap-On is held during the MRO Americas conference, April 25-27, in Orlando, Florida.
