2. Review your conversations with your direct reports, your boss and others in your department. Did they unexpectedly change the subject? Did they offer no response to you, and/or cut the conversation short? Did you give specific praise when it was warranted? Did you ask questions when you were asked to help?


3. Was there any situation that really sticks out in your mind? Did you act with strong character, or was there something you could have done or said in a more appropriate way?


The true test of your character is when the unexpected happens. How you respond (calmly) or react (frantically) will follow your reputation and lay the foundation of how your team interacts with you.


TO SUMMARIZE Honesty and humility are more than simply behaviors – telling what you think and learning how to deflect or include others in your praise. These must flow from deep inside you – becoming second nature and not looking at it from a selfish or narcissistic viewpoint. Having a difficult time ‘getting there’? Look inside yourself – at your past successes and failures to objectively ascertain how much of your success was ‘luck’, how much you accomplished solely by yourself, and how much other people’s words and actions played a major role in that event. You might be surprised at what you see now that you were blinded to before! You have nothing to lose now do you? Next time you have a few minutes to yourself, whether
