lesson. Despite her encouragement, I did not become a pilot. But in those minutes with Iris I understood why so many of her students gained the confi dence to succeed. Iris and I have often participated as speakers during events which honor women in aviation. One year we were both featured at the Chino Planes of Fame Museum in California where a friend of Iris’ was also the lead pilot for their airworthy vintage planes. As a ‘thank-you’ for donating our time, we were invited to take a ride in the museum’s B25. Iris led the way for me as we crawled underneath the pilots’ seats and settled into the glass nose of the bomber. Within minutes we were circling over dairy farms and the aircraft fi lled with the smell of cows. I must have looked ill, because Iris quickly instructed me to focus on the horizon and not on the dizzying spirals of blurry earth below. Happily her advice worked and I was soon well enough to imagine what it sounded and felt like for WWII pilots. And, for a woman ferry pilot. There are many women in aviation whose stories I have yet to write. There are many women in aviation whose stories I will never know. And certainly, most women who work in aviation will never be famous. Look around you. You may be working with a woman in aviation. This is our month to recognize their contributions.
