Sleepless in Seattle


“I HOPE YOU’LL ALL BE SLEEPLESS TONIGHT,” said Virgin Atlantic founder Richard Branson, at a party in Seattle to launch the airline’s new route. The inaugural flight from Heathrow to Seattle Tacoma airport followed Virgin Atlantic taking over the route from its partner Delta, and Branson said the B787 Dreamliner adds 40,000 seats a year to the route, plus a premium economy service (see Q&A with Virgin CEO on page 20). Norwegian has also announced a Seattle route, from Gatwick.


BOOKINGS SURVEY Direct booking on the rise


BUSINESS TRAVELLERS ARE INCREASINGLY BOOKING direct with suppliers and embracing mobile and sharing economy services, a new study into booking behaviours has found. The study, conducted by GBTA and Concur, found nearly one-third of business travellers expect to use “alternative channels” more often in the next year. However, the study found this growth in direct bookings will not come at the expense of using an online booking tool (OBT). The study of travellers based in Europe’s three largest business travel markets – Germany, UK and France – revealed that over the past year one-third booked directly with a supplier and a quarter used an online travel agency (OTA), despite having access to an OBT.


When asked to rank their most preferred booking channels, 30 per cent who had OBT access in the past year rank this channel as their top choice, even if they had no restrictions. At the same time, roughly half of business travellers in each country would prefer booking directly with a supplier or using an OTA. The numbers indicate mobile booking is likely to continue to grow in the near future as a decent share of business travellers expect to book on a mobile device ‘more often’ in the next year, while only a tiny share expect to do so ‘less often’.

Travel budgets set to increase as buyers defy Brexit concerns


TRAVEL BUDGETS ACROSS EUROPE will increase in 2017, with many businesses predicting no impact from Brexit on the business travel market, new research has found.


A study of 982 travel, HR and procurement professionals across Europe showed travel budgets grew 1 per cent in 2016, with a 2.5 per cent rise predicted for 2017. The findings come from American Express Global Business Travel (GBT), which announced the


findings of its European Business Travel Barometer during an annual company event in Paris. Growth in travel spend in 2016 was driven by small and mid-sized companies, which saw budget increases of 1.8 per cent and 2.1 per cent respectively.


The study showed that geopolitical developments haven’t dented overall confidence as 67 per cent predict Brexit would have no impact on the European business travel market.
