INSTITUTE NEWS Two days that could change the way you work

Manchester Central will again be the venue for this year’s Healthcare Estates event.

A key focus at October’s Healthcare Estates 2017 event at Manchester Central, the organisers say, will be ‘the challenging balance to be achieved in meeting both financial and quality targets, while delivering a safe and effective service’.

Also in the spotlight, with IHEEM and HefmA having over the past 2-3 years acted as a conduit and communication channel between the Department of Health and the Lord Carter team on the one hand, and healthcare estates and facilities professionals

IHEEM’s CEO, Julian Amey, said: “The DH has taken an innovative step in handing the challenge back to the estates and facilities profession through to 2020, and it is a challenge IHEEM is prepared for.”

working on the Productivity and Efficiency Agenda on the other, will be the need for collaboration. During 2016 IHEEM and HefmA jointly delivered with the DH a number of workshops nationwide to launch the Productivity and Efficiency programme, sharing best practice and case studies, and providing expert help, support, and advice. Speakers at Healthcare Estates 2017 will report on the outcomes of these.

The need for a different approach Event director, Steve Webb, said: “At Healthcare Estates 2017 (which will take place from 10-11 October at Manchester Central), delegates will be able to hear how the NHS has risen to the challenge of year-on-year cost improvement plans, with examples of different approaches by Trusts and suppliers. The demands of innovation, integration, and collaboration, are already being addressed by IHEEM, which has been working with the

Department of Health’s Estates and Facilities team since late 2015. In fact IHEEM and HefmA were requested by the DH to engage the EFM profession across all NHS Trusts in delivering the Productivity and Efficiency programme.”

Comparison with their peers

Steve Webb continued: “The estates and facilities benchmark ‘dashboards’ issued by the Department – which were produced from a combination of ERIC and

other data – clearly demonstrate to all 136 English acute Trusts across England their relative productivity and efficiency across their estates and facilities services. The dashboards, benchmarked against the Adjusted Treatment Cost (now the Weighted Activity Unit), and the emergence of the Model Hospital Portal, give a realistic indication of performance, and it is with these benchmark tools that Trusts have embarked on their plans to deliver these efficiencies by 2020. Healthcare Estate 2017 offers a unique opportunity for Trusts to come together and discuss both overcoming any existing obstacles, and the key steps that will be required.”

Julian Amey, IHEEM’s CEO, said: “IHEEM, working with its partnering associations, will continue assisting the DH in delivering the Carter Productivity and Efficiency programme via sharing of best practice and case studies, verifying ERIC data,

providing training events, and developing information for the Model Hospital Portal. The DH has taken an innovative step in handing the challenge back to the estates and facilities profession through to 2020, and it is a challenge IHEEM is prepared for.”

A wealth of examples and different packages

Conference director, Victoria Emerton, said: “This year’s conference will offer a wealth of examples of collaboration following on from last year’s presentations. We will also be offering a raft of different packages – making the conference more affordable for all – with details to be announced in next month’s HEJ. Healthcare Estates 2017 will have a different feel, with even more interactive sessions. We will be changing the format slightly, as delegate numbers have grown to over 500, and feedback from those attending is that they like real examples of delivery and interactive workshops.” Steve Webb added: “By visiting the exhibition, meanwhile, visitors will see more manufacturers, suppliers, products, services, and special offers, and have the opportunity to do business and make new contacts, all in one place. As organisers, Step Exhibitions, will also be providing more meeting and networking areas at the event to encourage visitors and delegates to sit down and share their experiences and issues, and discover solutions togeether, with examples from speakers on what can be achieved.” For more information on Healthcare Estates 2017, telephone 01892 518877, or visit the event website at www.healthcare-estates.com
