MOBILE & MODULAR BUILDINGS ROUND-UP JAG-compliant modular endoscopy facility

Framework could save buyers ‘an average of 5%’ Public sector organisations looking

At the end of January 2017 MTX successfully handed over a brand new Endoscopy Unit to George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton.

The company designed and built for George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust a bespoke single-storey modular building to enable it to relocate its Endoscopy Department. Made up of 21 modules, it provides endoscopy and bronchoscopy treatment rooms, decontamination and clean areas, and male and female first and second stage recovery. The new building provides 1,000 m2 of columnless space. The internal walls are constructed using a pre-finished steel product specifically formulated to

help maintain a clean, safe environment. The Endoscopy Department was designed to incorporate sustainable and renewable technologies, including LED lighting, while repeatable room designs were used throughout for the patient areas, consultation rooms, WCs, and staff changing rooms. ‘Male and female only’ areas are identified through modern colour coding, giving the department a contemporary, minimalist style.

The project was consulted through, and wholly compliant with, JAG (Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy) guidelines. The new facility was constructed in just 32 weeks.

Velindre Hospital’s stylish new office block the winter, whereas a modular building

Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff has selected modular construction for a new office block to consolidate its administration staff in one location and allow it to expand its patient care areas. Mike Ellery, Capital Development and Operations manager, explained: “We wanted the building in place early in the year. We knew traditional construction would be more at risk of delays through

gave us a better guarantee on deliverables.” The hospital contacted Wernick Buildings, and the new building was manufactured ‘swiftly and easily’ in just six weeks at the company’s factory, although the installation proved more challenging, Wernick’s contracts manager, Ben Hitchcock, explained: “The proposed site was between protected buildings and a protected tree. The lift also required a 250-tonne crane, which it took us an hour to get on site.” The 27 units were rapidly installed, and the external finish – of white render with cedar cladding features – was soon complete. The building also features external lighting and security systems, while inside are conference rooms, open plan office space, a disabled access lift, toilet facilities, and an ADT alarm system.

to buy modular building solutions could save an average of 5% compared with purchasing such solutions direct via a new Modular Buildings Framework – the only national agreement of its type, says NHS Shared Business Services, which has just launched it. It said: “The framework offers a compliant route for procuring all types of modular buildings, covering offsite building solutions for purchase, hire, and lease, with specific lots for healthcare, education, catering, and bespoke solutions. The efficiency gains from manufactured solutions support the delivery of the Government’s construction and industry strategy targets, which include time and cost savings, plus whole-life cost benefits and in-use savings. The specification has been developed through consultation with the market and experts in the field. There are huge benefits to offsite construction, particularly within the NHS, where there is often limited onsite space, urgent requirements, and squeezed capital budgets.” Awarded suppliers are: Actavo Building Solutions; Ashby and Croft; Built Offsite; Caledonian Modular; Cotaplan (Modular Buildings); Elite Systems GB; Elliott Group; Extraspace Solutions; Ideal Building Systems; McAvoy Group; ModuleCo Healthcare; ModuleCo; MTX Contracts; PKL Group; Portakabin; Premier Modular; R G Stones (Buildings); REDS10; Servaccomm Redhall; Wernick Buildings, and Western Building Systems.
