On 15 March the first ever IHEEM Authorising Engineer (AE) Conference is being held at Cranmore Park (pictured) on the outskirts of Birmingham – and will reflect the key part that AEs play in the safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operation of healthcare facilities, and the complexities and challenges of their role. Craig Willcock, IHEEM’s events and marketing manager explained: “This new conference will feature cross-disciplinary presentations and discussions. Speakers from across the healthcare estates sector, including representatives from NHS Trusts and the IHEEM Authorising Engineer Registration Boards, will be using case studies, and sharing their experience, to facilitate discussions around the key themes.”

The day’s first session will see the chairs of the IHEEM Authorising Engineer Registration Boards focus on the role of the Authorising Engineer, the registration process, the requirements of each of the AE disciplines, how the processes can be standardised, and how the Boards can help potential AEs through the application process.
The second morning session, led by a panel of Authorising Engineers from across the disciplines, will address the appointment of an Authorised Person, with the aim of creating a standard across the sector for such an appointment. Discussions will revolve around a number of themes, including the key considerations, the processes for appointment, monitoring and assessment of an Authorised Person, and

the ‘expectations versus the reality’ of an AP, while the third pre-lunch session will examine the importance of the Authorising Engineer in maintaining patient safety from the perspective of a Trust, which will be sharing its experience of working with an AE. The morning’s final session will see a panel of Authorising Engineers share useful tips applicable across the disciplines. After lunch, attendees will be split into their discipline groupings for the day’s final sessions, with more opportunities for in-depth discussions with peers. Craig Willcock said: “Open to all Authorising Engineers, and those interested in becoming an AE, the event will be an ideal way for attendees to enhance their CPD by ensuring they are up-to-date with the latest guidance for their role, and will also provide valuable networking opportunities. The conference will provide a forum for AEs to share best practice, raise their profile, develop new business leads, and gain an understanding of the key changes to guidance. With spaces going fast, now is the time to book. IHEEM-registered Authorising Engineers can attend free-of-charge, and IHEEM members at just £49, while the price for non-IHEEM registered Authorising Engineers and non-members is £99. (all ex VAT). There are also opportunities for companies to raise their profile, showcase new products, and for sponsorship.” For more information, visit
