According to data released last month, record numbers of patients are now waiting over four hours for Accident & Emergency treatment, while in the past four years the number awaiting routine operations for longer than stipulated Government targets has risen by 163 %.
Couple these issues with ‘bed-blocking’ – often a result of patients being ‘left stranded’ in hospitals due to a lack of available community care, an ageing demographic, and pressures on funding, and one can see why even some of the most dedicated healthcare professionals feel the NHS is facing a ‘perfect storm’.
Against such a gloomy backdrop, however, there remains considerable innovation service-wide, with advances in treatments, increased emphasis on infection control, and growing breakthroughs in personalised drug treatments having massive patient benefits. The design of modern healthcare facilities – drawing on past experience and lessons from elsewhere, is also placing an unprecedented emphasis on both ‘future-proofing’, and the quality of the patient and staff environment. One current project to highlight these factors is the ongoing £485 m redevelopment project at Brighton’s Royal

Kemper’s latest development in water hygiene – a flushing device that ensures regular movement of hot and cold potable water through a system to maintain safe temperatures – was launched earlier this year, but has already been installed in a number of UK facilities, and is proving ‘a huge success’. The company said: “To ensure the proper functioning of a building’s water system, the designer must take into account maximum predicted usage, despite the fact that

and PWH, and for both, through one box. As an independent flushing appliance, the HS2 hygienic flushing box can be configured and controlled through the HS2 ‘app’. Flushing records can then be read and forwarded via any Bluetooth-enabled device. Alternatively, the box can be linked to any BMS or KHS Master 2.0 ‘mini control system’.
Kemper added: “The HS2 was developed for use in any type of building. A variable flushing output of 4 litres / min,
this usage level will rarely, if ever, be reached, during the installation’s lifetime. Stagnation, and build-up of harmful bacteria, can potentially occur in both the potable cold water (PWC) and potable hot water (PWH) supply.” Kemper says its new KHS HS2 hygienic flushing box ‘helps restore hygienic conditions’ through a controlled ‘forced withdrawal’; water exchange can be controlled via time, temperature, and volume parameters. Variable flushing options can be selected for both PWC

Sussex County Hospital (see pages 47-51), where ageing 1820s-built wards and treatment facilities are being replaced with brand new facilities. Alongside new diagnostic and treatment facilities, and expanded critical care and improved teaching space, the famous seaside hospital will also soon have a new 21st century cancer centre, enabling more cancer patients to be treated nearer to home. HEJ will in the near future report on a project of a similar magnitude – the construction of the UK’s first high-energy proton beam therapy centre at Manchester’s Christie Hospital. The hi-tech facility will save hundreds of patients with difficult-to-treat tumours having to travel overseas for treatment. Before building the centre, the design team travelled extensively to existing PBT centres in the US and mainland Europe to understand some of the challenges, and identify the ‘solutions’ when constructing a building of this monumental scale. When I met team members at the site, their pride in the scheme, and its harnessing of a wealth of UK expertise, was clearly palpable.
