A wealth of knowledge Our experienced team can provide a wealth of expert knowledge and support on ventilation systems. We can review validation and verification documentation and methods, audit ventilation systems, and review training requirements for internal employees, as well as provide training for employees when required. Our comprehensive training for Competent Persons Ventilation is endorsed by the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS), and takes place over three days in clients’ own hospitals to minimise disruption. The course is a mixture of theory and practical sessions to ensure that trainees are fully equipped to deal with any issues.


Planning for a safer future A key part of the service we can provide is to review and approve ventilation system designs before any work takes place. This pre-emptive measure can help to prevent potentially costly mistakes further down the line, and enable changes to be made before buildings are constructed, or before equipment is procured or installed.


If faults or issues are found during the review and approval process, our team can also assist hospitals in prioritising a programme of improvements based on risk and clinical need, and can create a flexible ‘five-year plan’ to fix the issues. The plan should then be put into action through the hospital ventilation group meetings, where the operational estates, capital projects, and infection control teams should work in collaboration. Members of the IOM team belong to the Specialised Ventilation in Healthcare (SVH) society that was created by a group of Authorising Engineers. The IOM is also UKAS-accredited for microbiological sampling in theatres and Sterile Services Departments, including for incubation and enumeration of microbiological samples.


Maintaining high standards Estates managers are fully aware of Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs), Health Building Notes (HBNs), and Building Regulations, and should pay careful attention to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations to protect patients and employees.


In a sector where the risk to employees is high, such personnel have a tough job to do. By ensuring that all compliance needs are met, and investing in improvements for the future, hospital Trusts can create a sustainable system that will protect all those they serve. hej


About the author


Jerry Slann BSc (Hons), CEng, CMIOSH, MIMMM, FIHEEM, director of Occupational Hygiene at the IOM, has established a long-standing career in occupational hygiene, and has worked in a range of industries, concentrating his expertise on minimising the risk of people’s exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace, and advising on the optimum control measures. He is also an Authorising Engineer for ventilation, a Chartered Engineer, and a European Engineer. He joined the IOM in 2002, and heads up the Institute’s UK delivery of Occupational Hygiene services throughout the country, contributing to raising standards throughout the industry.


 
