NEW STORES Madison Hall

Shopping here feels fancy, but not too fancy. Inside Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, Madison Hall is one store divided by a hall— flowers, jewelry and spa products on one side and men’s jackets, books and travel items on the other. You want to touch it all, maybe even take it home. The good news is, you can (it may look like a museum, but it is a store, after all). Owners Lance Lawson and Jim Wetzel wanted the shop to have everything hotel guests could need, plus things they (and we) want. Products, including local vintage-style tees and luxurious European jackets, come from near and far. “The whole idea for these shops is obviously for the hotel guests but also for people in the neighborhood, because there’s not a lot of infrastructure over here (in the Loop) if you want to buy hip things,” Lawson says.

This Montreal-based menswear brand opened its second U.S. store (the first was in Boston) in Chicago in August with a pop-up that’s set to stay in Wicker Park for a year (if you’re good, maybe two). The company designs and manufactures monthly collections

in rich colors and contemporary cuts. That’s right—every

month you’ll find a brand new batch of duds. “Every single piece in this store is something we designed: We sourced the fabric, we manufactured and distributed, and every single piece in the store is refreshed monthly,” says Eric Alper, senior vice president of marketing. This fall’s looks are inspired by adventure: September’s theme is “Tokyo

HOW TO... Tie a scarf

West Town Re-Up Set to open in mid- September, the West Town Re-Up crew strives to make great interior design accessible (i.e. you don’t have to be a bajillionaire to live cool and comfortably). Owners Erin Schremp and Patricia Hall source, fix and refurbish eclectic and midcentury furniture to fit spaces of all sizes, budgets and design styles. Inventory at this store (formerly online only) will refresh often and cover all bases, with dressers, tables, couches, art, lamps and more from $50 to $900. 902 N California Ave (312.399.7689, westtownreup .com)—Jess Keys

1 Open the scarf.

Find the middle, grab the fabric, and fold the scarf over.

2

Place the scarf’s center at the middle of your neck, so its halves drape over your back.

3

Crisscross the halves, and bring them back around to the front. Voila! Simple scarf.

4

Or take it to the next level: Crisscross again and tie (almost like a knot).

5

Loosen the top part of the scarf under your chin so you can flatten the tied part, pulling from side to side to smoothen the fabric and see the layers.

6

Pull the original top part of the scarf loosely over the new second layers for a bulky turtleneck look.

KELLY L., LINCOLN PARK “Picking my favorite Chicago shop isn’t an easy thing to do, but Bucktown’s Vintage Charm really stands out. It has an amazing selection of clothing and gifts that you wouldn’t find in department stores or from large retailers. Its products are unique and wonderfully made, and the staff is warm and welcoming. I get so many compliments and questions about my Vintage Charm pieces, and I love that!”
