Pining for the sun- (and rain-) drenched days of Pitchfork Music Festival? Don’t worry—indie rock is well represented on the Riot Fest bill. Come prepared to assign decimal-point ratings to performances by verbose rockers Speedy Ortiz (September 11), former Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore (September 12) and jangling Canadian indie popsters Alvvays (September 13).
Rappers’ delight Mic check! Hip-hop acts are becoming increasingly common at Riot Fest, and this year’s lineup continues the trend. Ice Cube (September 11) teams up with a group of special guests to perform N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton. Later in the weekend, Snoop Dogg (September 13) drops by to run through Doggystyle in its entirety. Also in attendance: Underrated Long Island trio De La Soul (September 13).

It’s a new beginning for Riot Fest, which will celebrate its fourth year as an outdoor event by taking its stages, carnival rides and sideshows to Douglas Park this September. Situated on the edge of Lawndale—directly to the south of its former home in Humboldt Park—the festival’s new location is just a short walk from the California Pink Line station. Also nearby: the Lagunitas Brewing Company TapRoom’s hoppy brews and Taqueria Los Barrilitos’ al pastor tacos. Before you throw on your denim vest and combat boots,

Humongous headliners It’s telling that each Riot Fest headliner could have easily been a main stage act at Lollapalooza— that includes ska punks turned pop rockers No Doubt, who top the bill on September 11. The following night, a reunited System of a Down takes the stage to start a heavy metal mosh pit, while the final evening closes with the jagged guitar melodies of Modest

Who are the must-see acts this year at Riot Fest? My eyes bleed whenever I try to read the full Riot Fest lineup, but Meat Wave and Alvvays are two lesser-known bands that are going to leave that festival with about

Total punks Riot Fest still embraces its punk rock roots—this year Rancid (Sept ember 12) will play its seminal 1995 release, …And Out Come the Wolves in full. Still not punk enough for you? Check out recently out-of-retirement hardcore act Drive Like Jehu (September 12), or rock with the original riot grrrls L7 (September 13) —a.k.a. the band that once threw a used tampon into a festival crowd.

Old-timers Time waits for no punk, not even the perpetually shirtless Iggy Pop (September 12), who returns to Riot Fest sans the Stooges this year.
Interested in seeing a band that was ahead of its time? Don’t miss the appearance by Detroit proto-punk outfit Death (September 11). And if you’re looking for something twangy, a set from 78-year-old country legend Merle Haggard (September 12) should do the trick.
