Fall preview HOORAY FOR UNIQLO

Uniqlo on Michigan Ave

It’s finally happening, people—Uniqlo arrives this fall. Here’s everything you need to know about the colorful, kick-ass store. By Laura Rote

Get to it. What’s the store gonna be like? For starters, the

60,000-square-foot fashion mecca will be the brand’s second largest store in the U.S. It’ll have a Starbucks, free Wi-Fi and even a top- secret digital/visual experience as you ride the escalator. Not sure what you want, or not in the mood to interact with an actual human? Jump on Uniqlo’s mobile site (chicago.uniqlo. com, launching in October) and find the outfit you want—no, need—in-store or browse

recommendations based on your likes. What’s more, you can sign up for email sale notifications or simply browse the site to find deals while you’re there.

you’ll find

What you’re saying is it’ll totally kick the ass of the New York Fifth Avenue store, right? “Both stores offer a unique experience for both residents and tourists alike,” said Justin Kerr, chief merchandising officer for Uniqlo USA (rather tactfully—c’mon man!). Uniqlo is all about making your shopping experience personalized and, hell, even inspiring. Kerr said the new space will be bright, with vibrant floor-to-ceiling displays and light installations.

Cool. So when do we party? There’ll be a kick ass series of events to celebrate the opening in October, from the ribbon-cutting ceremony to a taiko drum ceremony, a concert in the park and, of course, opening weekend promotions and giveaways. “We haven’t completely finalized our special offers (as of press time) but will be discounting select products that address the needs of most Chicagoans,” says Kerr. Necessary items that help you stay warm in those Chicago winters!”

Yeah. Winter. The weather here is brutal. What should I wear? Keep an eye out for new variations of flannel, including dresses ($39.90–$69.90). In October,

M’s Flannel: 29.90

collaborations with Lemaire ($39.90– $199.90) and former Vogue Paris editor-in- chief Carine Roitfeld ($12.90–$199.90). Rainy weather? The ultra light down Water Defender jacket ($69.90) wicks away water. Of

course, before the Hawk blows back into town, you’ll want to check out Uniqlo’s Heattech brand items ($5.90–$29.90), which are incredibly thin and warm (no need for boring, bulky innerwear!). The store’s rayon items are also wrinkle-resistant, so go ahead, cram in on that crowded El.

Got any fun facts for us?

The name Uniqlo is the result of a misspelling. Its original brand, the Unique Clothing Warehouse, should really have been abbreviated as Uniclo, but a Japanese employee got the second consonant wrong.

Back to business. What’s the first thing I must buy?

Colored socks (four for $12.90), Supima T-shirts ($12.90–$14.90) and a classic black turtleneck ($19.90–$69.90).

Uniqlo will be located at 830 N Michigan Ave chicago.uniqlo.com
