Whether it’s multilayer die heads, redesigned screws or improved processing units, the latest advances in pipe extrusion technologies – all on show at K2016 – will boost throughput and quality


K2016: technology in the pipeline


Throughput is especially important in the plastic pipes sector, so there is no shortage of new machinery at K2016 that will allow extruders to boost their output – often in a smaller space, and far more efficiently that before. KraussMaffei Berstorff will show visitors how its 36D twin-screw extruders can boost PVC pipe produc- tion with minimum space requirements. At the event, two KMD 108-36 E2/R twin-screw


extruders will produce pipe at throughputs up to 2000kg/h – in around two-thirds of the usual space, says the company. “This system is of particular interest to processors who manufacture PVC standard pipes in large quantities and must focus on cost-effectiveness,” said Peter Roos, president of the extrusion technology business. “Higher output with a smaller footprint cuts production costs over the long term.” The energy requirements are also lower compared to


a larger extruder that uses the twin strand. The combination saves 0.02kW per hour, for each kg of material throughput compared to a KMD 164-32/R. The product is used with the KM-RK 23-250 pipe


head, from the newly designed pipe head generation designed for a large diameter range with very high outputs. Design features such as flow channel volume and mandrel ridges configured for optimum flow make the pipe head suitable for high-performance extrusion

process concept is on a long pre-heating length, which ensures a balance of shearing energy and heating energy, leading to optimal material processing and high melt homogeneity. In addition, it ensures low compres- sion values in the area of the throttle zones. Wear- resistance is guaranteed by deep-nitrided barrels and a molybdenum welded layer on the screw threads – al- lowing it to process highly filled PVC compounds. The company will also present the largest version of its QuickSwitch pipe die technology – with a version that efficiently changes dimensions for the 280-500mm diameter range. In pipe production, material accounts for up to 70%


of the cost, so processors want to produce as little scrap as possible. “This system is of particular interest for large pipe


diameters, as in this application the quantity of waste is limited to a tapered piece of approximately three to six metres,” said Roos. QuickSwitch also helps to conserve raw material, so that it is used as efficiently as possible, he added. “Every processor wants to produce as little excess
