Pipe inspection & testing | process feature

Putting pipes to the test

In a few cases, pipe can be extruded in enormous lengths and laid directly in place. Usually, though, it is cut into straight lengths that are joined together. Contractors need to be confident that the joins they make – and the material itself – will both ensure maximum pipe life. UK-based Impact Solutions has signed an exclusive

agreement to license its NDT technology for electrofusion fittings to Toronto-based pipeline specialist Jana – which will commercialise the equipment in North America. Impact NDT – known as JanaDetect in North

America – is a low cost technology for non-destructive testing of electrofusion pipe fittings in polyethylene (PE) pipelines. It was developed over the last five years by the R&D team at Impact Solutions. The NDT technology has been tested in field trials over the past 12 months, with UK water and gas authorities and large private contractors. In real time, it can identify welds that would fail the expensive ISO or ASTM industry standard destructive tests. The technique is being developed as a simple-to-

use, cost-effective and accurate tool based on A-scan ultrasonic technology. As the wave form output from an

Plastic pipes need to last for a long time – so it’s no surprise that methods to test them are

getting ever more sophisticated. Lou Reade reports

A-scan contains a significant amount of information about the substrate through which the sound passes, the key to this methodology is the new approach to analysing the sound waves. Originally developed by Impact for assessing large

diameter fittings in the UK water industry, it is now being calibrated by Jana and Impact for use on smaller diameter gas distribution piping electrofusion fittings. Impact NDT is currently available in the UK as an

NDT service for real time electrofusion joint assess- ment on site. The next stages of development will produce a ‘black box’ solution that allows instant
