Annen and Emmen, enabling the supply of 2.5m cubic metres of drinking water per year to the province of Groningen.


The pipeline project was executed in 400mm PVC-O (MRS45), and 500mm UPVC pipe. WMD chose PVC-O pipe because it had good experiences in working with the material. At around the same time, water company Vitens


closed a drinking water pumping station in the village of Speuld. To ensure safe drinking water supply to the village, a 9km PVC-O pipe line with a diameter of 400mm was installed between Speuld and a new water pumping station in Harderwijk. During assessment of the project, significant time was spent by the pipe manufacturer and contractor, to determine the optimal logistical planning. The first 2.7km of pipe was installed in September 2015, during which three trucks supplied the pipe over the course of three days. The route ran through the Veluwe nature reserve,


with a lot of forest and narrow roads. Along the full route, optimal unloading locations were determined. This was essential given that the PVC-O pipes were supplied in 10m lengths. “An advantage of a continuous in-line bi-oriented


PVC extrusion process is that pipe can be manufactured in any length – contrary to off-line batch processes, where only discrete lengths of pipe can be manufac- tured,” said André Nijland, area manager for technology licensing at Wavin. The 10m pipe lengths ensured faster installation by


the contractor, Van Gelder – which installed between 100 and 200m of pipe each day. As part of the project,


Van Gelder also carried out horizontal drills with a total length of 350m, to avoid an old Roman camp. As well as the long lengths and lower weights, the


water company said the higher pressure capabilities of PVC-O pipe was an important reason behind its choice: the pumping station in Harderwijk is 25m lower than the upstream part of the pipeline in Speuld – meaning that more pressure was required to pump the potable water ‘uphill’. Usually, Vitens specifies 7.5bar UPVC pipe, but in


this case a 400mm, 10 bar PVC-O pipe was chosen. Additionally the water company said it was important to finish the pipeline on time – which required installation during winter time. “As there is no loss of impact strength in PVC-O pipe


down to temperatures of -20°C, the contractor could continue the installation during wintertime at sub-zero temperatures,” said Nijland.
