New slip additive boasts extra stability
Croda has expanded its range of processing aids for poly- olefi ns. Its Incroslip SL is said to combine the slip of eru- camide with the stability of behenamide. Croda says that standard slip additives may break down under stressed conditions, with the degrada- tion products affecting the feel, taste and odour of the polymer – and possibly also the contents of the packaging. Incroslip SL is fully
saturated and exhibits high oxidative stability; there is no loss of slip or any impact on
taste, Croda claims. The additive demonstrates high slip comparable to erucamide in polyolefi n fi lms at low addition levels. At press time, Croda said
that Incroslip SL was FDA compliant, and EU food compliance was in the process of being established. Oxidative stability is particularly important for applications where taste and smell is critical, such as water bottle caps. Michelle Down- ham, marketing coordinator polymer additives, says that in
a panel study of 20 volunteers, 70% rated Incroslip SL as the lowest or least offensive odour. Croda is also aiming
Incroslip SL at plastics for automotive applications where resistance to high interior temperatures and exposure to UV light is important. Com- pounds containing the additive retain their colour stability, and tackiness is reduced. Also interesting for auto
applications, Incroslip SL reduces the width, depth and appearance of a scratch in
various polymer systems. It protects the polymer from damage by migrating to the surface and reducing friction. According to Croda, Incroslip SL can greatly reduce scratching in polypropylene plaques at only 1% addition.
