such as use of natural fibres and nano-cellulose as well as bioplastic material modifications and improvements,” he says. It is clear that materials testing and analysis is

moving into high gear for many compounders. As formulations target more specific properties and performance, the ability to accurately evaluate resins, additives, fillers and other components will be critical to the services compounders offer. Equipment suppliers understand this, as do testing services. Both aim to provide the instruments and expertise necessary for compounders large and small to meet these evolving process needs.

Stretching the limits With plastic compounds being used in increasingly demanding applications even tensile testing is becoming more challenging, especially where samples need to be characterised at elevated temperature. The Advanced Video Extensometer, recently introduced by Instron, addresses this by simplifying non-contacting strain measurement and is especially well suited to operation of testing equipment with environmental chambers.

The device is designed to minimise errors caused by thermal or lighting variation, making it suitable for use in most laboratory environments, and offers a real-time 490Hz data rate and 1 micron measurement accuracy. It can be used with a wide range of tensile testing machines equipped with a standard ±10v analog input, providing users with the full benefits of non-contacting strain measurement. These include elimination of the risk of gauge slip, no possibility of influencing the test result, and no possibility of extensometer damage at specimen failure. Reliability is also improved due to a reduction in moving parts.
