event preview | Compounding World Forum 2015
Speakers on the fi rst day of the Compounding World Forum 2016 include (from left to right): Jacob Goodwin, Dr Alexis Baltazar, Tom Drye; Dr Oliver Frey; Uwe Neumann; and Dr Chandra Raman
Engineered Solutions. As we reported in our special feature on 3D printing materials in the May 2015 edition of Compounding World, Techmer ES has been working with Oak Ridge National Laboratory on materials for big area additive manufacturing (BAAM) applications. One example from this development programme is a carbon-fi bre-reinforced grade that was used to produce a 3D printed Shelby Cobra replica car. Earlier this year, in the February 2015 edition of Compounding World, we reported on the excitement being generated by the return of polyketones to full-scale production. The polymer was fi rst commer- cialised by Shell under the Carilon brand-name in the mid 1990s, but production ended in 2000 when Shell exited the plastics business. Now Hyosung of South Korea has restarted production of polyketones and it completed its new 50,000 tonnes/year production plant this year. Several leading compounders have been quick to
develop and launch new compounds based on Hyosung’s polyketones, including Ensinger of Germany. Dr Oliver Frey, who heads up the company’s compounding department, will discuss the characteristics of the polymer, including its very special tribological properties. The next presentation will focus on the production of
polypropylene micro-granules for rotational moulding applications using a specially developed underwater pelletizing technology. The talk will be given by Uwe Neumann, sales director at the Austrian pelletizer producer Econ. The new technology is the result of a collaborative
development project involving four corporate and two research partners. It involves the production of 0.5-1 mm diameter micro-pellets for the rotational moulding of hollow PP parts that can be used at higher tempera- tures than those made using polyethylene. Target applications include hot water storage for solar plants. Traditionally, PP has to be milled using oxygen
cooling to produce a suitable particle size for rotational moulding. The new technology being presented by Econ is designed to be more cost-effective and energy-effi - cient, as well as offering other benefi ts that will be discussed at the conference. The fi nal presentation on the fi rst day of the Compounding World Forum 2015 will focus on adding

thermal conductivity to thermoplastics, which is a subject that always generates lots of interest when we cover it in the pages of this magazine. The talk will be given by Dr Chandra Raman, applications development leader at Momentive Performance Materials. He will focus specifi cally on the benefi ts that
thermally-conductive compounds can bring to electron- ics applications. Momentive supplies boron nitride additives for such materials and applications, and Dr Raman will present three case studies showing how they are being used. The second day of the conference will feature six
papers on new developments in additives, including antimicrobials, nanotubes, anti-counterfeiting tech- nologies, impact modifi ers, and sustainable additives. There will also be a session on getting the most from compounding lines with practical presentations from leading extrusion experts. Full details will be included in the second part of this preview in next month’s Compounding World.
More information The Compounding World Forum 2015 is sponsored by Steer, MDI, Omya, Dreytek, NFM and CPM Century Extrusion. In addition to the high-level conference sessions, the event will feature a large exhibition area that will only be open to conference delegates and speakers. It will be used for networking during the refreshment breaks, lunches and the evening cocktail reception. Last year’s exhibition was a sell-out with more than 50 exhibitors and spaces are selling very fast this year. For more information about participating in the Compounding World Forum as a delegate, exhibitor or sponsor, please contact Kelly Cressman who is confer- ence coordinator for the event:
