AMI launches polymer testing and analysis event for 2016

AMI is launching a new event focused on the testing of plastics materials and products. The first Polymer Testing & Analysis conference will take place on 12-14 April 2016 in Cologne, Germany. It will provide an important

new meeting place for scientists, laboratory staff, researchers and R&D professionals who develop, test and analyse new polymer materials, formulations and products. They will have the

Tisan invests in new line and plant

Turkey’s Tisan Engineering Plastics has installed a new twin screw compounding line at its Instanbul plant, lifting annual production capacity from 22,000 to 30,000 tonnes. The line incorporates an

SM Platek twin screw extruder equipped with Brabender feeders, Automatik pelletizer and Vibra spiral elevator. It joins seven smaller twin screw and three single screw lines on the site. The company said it has also acquired a 13,000m2 site in the GEPKIM Organize Industrial Zone in Kocaeli province where it plans to build its third production facility. ❙ www.tisan.com.tr

opportunity to discover and debate the latest innovations and best practices in polymer testing, characterisation and analysis. In addition to a busy

two-day programme of presentations from leading players in the market, Polymer Testing & Analysis will feature an exhibition area and high-level networking for professionals from throughout the plastics supply chain. Proposals for presentations

at this new event should be submitted by 9 October 2015. Some of the topics that could be covered include: mechani- cal properties; fatigue testing; failure analysis; surface properties; assessing smell, taste, emissions and migra- tion; moisture analysis; fire and smoke testing; flow properties; barrier perfor- mance; monitoring colour, visual and optical properties; testing weatherability; plastics identification and deformula-

tion; sample preparation; lab-scale plastics processing; managing an efficient lab; software and data manage- ment; calibration and labora- tory accreditation; and new materials testing standards. For more information on participating in the event as a delegate, speaker, sponsor or exhibitor, please contact the conference organiser Laura Richardt at lr@amiplastics.com or tel: +44 (0) 117 314 8111. ❙ http://bit.ly/PolymerTesting

S&E in the swim with Amp Fins

Speciality plastic compounder S&E Specialty Polymers worked together with Amp Fins, a company headed by amputee Randy Lord, to develop a new diving fin designed specifically for amputees.

The Amp Fin is the result of

seven years of development work by Lord, who filed an initial patent on the design in 2013. According to S&E, material selection was one of the main challenges in commercialising the idea and it developed a special com- pound for the project based on TPR and SEBS (designated TufPrene 4005C-80A). “This is just the right

durometer, with enough memory and rigidity to keep its shape but enough softness to be comfortable,” the company said. “In addition, the com- pound is neutrally buoyant,

heat-resistant and available in numerous colours. The design allows for a 100% power stroke in both directions, which allows the amputee to swim more efficiently and effectively than someone with both limbs intact.” Moulds are currently under

construction to suit a wide range of users, with commer- cial launch of the Amp Fin planned for Q4 of this year. ❙ www.sespoly.com
