year’s SPE International Polyolefi ns Conference in Houston in February. Rick King, senior technical manager at the company’s R&D hub at Tarrytown in the US, said there is a growing need for improved stabilisation systems both for existing and new polyolefi ns being developed for targeted markets and demanding specifi c end-use applications. “It is particularly important that the unique features attributable to the molecular architecture of the polymer be maintained …allowing for more demanding processing conditions and applications,” he said. “Traditional stabiliser blends based on a phenolic


AO and a phosphite based melt processing stabiliser can take care of most polymers and downstream applications via optimisation of loadings and ratios of the components,” King said. “However, for polymers with unique performance features that have been designed for demanding applications, a more effective stabiliser system is typically required. “We have developed two families of highly effective


stabilisation systems that consistently deliver improved processability in a variety of polymer technologies. These Improved Processability Stabilisation (IPS) systems can be used to fulfi l an unmet need in the industry, where polyolefi ns with improved or special physical and ancillary properties can be maintained in order to capture their full value in markets and applications,” he said. The new stabilisation systems described in his presentation ensure good retention of melt


processability and low development of colour during


processing, as well as discoloration resistance after processing. King said these improved systems can provide high performance at concentrations up to 33% below current industry benchmarks. He provided examples in linear low and high density polyethylene and polypropylene. BASF is also expanding its offering for stabilisation

systems for rotational moulding grades of polyethylene. Based on the Irgastab RM 68 platform, the new systems feature BASF’s fast-sintering technology that reduces energy usage and cycle time, allowing the polymer to achieve its maximum impact strength rapidly and maintain its properties over a broad range of processing conditions. BASF says the systems offer low colour and resistance to gas fading discoloration, as well as improved long term thermal stability and weatherability. They are said to enable PE resins to maintain their mechanical properties even after 20,000 hours of accelerated weathering (UV20). “Over the past fi ve years, we’ve seen the market standard for UV protection in rotational moulding move from UV8 polymer grades to UV16 grades. With our stabilisation solutions enabling resins to achieve grades of UV20, we continue to lead customer demand for better durability,” says Tad Finnegan, senior technical manager for the Americas region for BASF Plastic Additives. Everspring Middle East technical manager Niall Marshall says: “Impressive advances in polymerisation technology and catalyst design, faster processing and more demanding applications mean that 20th century stabilisation approaches are not always suffi cient for 21st century resins.” He goes on to explain that for a stabiliser to be effective it needs to be available and reactive. “It must be present in suffi cient quantities where it is needed in the polymer and able to react faster than any of the competing polymer-chain-breaking reaction and not interfere with any other additive. For a stabiliser to be acceptable it also needs to comply with various regulatory requirements, especially when used in sensitive applications such as food contact, children’s toys and medical applications,” he says.
