event preview | Plastics Regulations 2017

will be opened by Mohammad Taghipourfard from Brunel University London, who will look at the determination of the effect of width of waisted section on energy-to-break values of HDPE in tensile test using waisted tensile test specimen geometry. He will be followed by Sezer Yildiz, Project Engineer at the Institut für Kunststoffverarbeitung Aachen (IKV), who will present a comparison of optical and mechanical strain recording in tensile testing. The second session of the day will explore new

Manager at Spectro Analytical Instruments, opens the session with a presentation on elemental analysis of polymers and plastics using XRF. Dr Timo Beskers from PSS Polymer Standards Service will discuss two dimensional polymer analysis using SEC and FTIR. And the session will be closed by Dr Michael Soll, European Business Development Manager at Frontier Laborato- ries, who will focus on the new Pyrolysis-GC/MS System incorporated with On-line Micro-UV Irradiation for rapid evaluation of photo, thermal and oxidative degradation of polymers.

The final session on day one discusses testing of

plastics for critical applications. Rebecca Blows, Research Engineer at R-TECH Services, will present an investiga- tion into the correlation between compressive creep testing and thermal analysis behaviour of marine chocking resins. Dieter Pauler, Laboratory Manager at Kraiburg TPE, will talk about VDI 2019, a new guideline for adhesion testing of thermoplastic elastomers on hard plastics. And Christoph Wiedmer, a PhD Student at Fraunhofer - Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging, will close the day with a paper focusing on identification of off-odours in toys and articles of daily use. The second day of Polymer Testing & Analysis 2017

developments in quality monitoring. Holger Lieder, Sales Director at Sikora, will present an innovative offline inspection and analysis system for plastic materials. Johannes Lorenz, Business Development Manager at Dynisco Europe will talk about online measurement of flow properties of polymer melt for quality control and material development. Felix Schmollgruber, Application Engineering Manager EMEA at X-Rite Europe begins the third session of day two looking at new ways of controlling colour quality and material appearance in effect pigmented plastics. He will be followed by Dr B. André Weinstock, Principal Research Scientist at Teleflex, who looks at a novel cGMP ATR-FTIR assay for rapid assessment of super-hydrophilic polymer surfaces. The final session of the conference will showcase the

latest developments in testing and analysis of biode- gradable and recycled plastics. Dr Marina Ramos, Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Analyti- cal Chemistry, Nutrition and Food Science at the University of Alicante, will discuss development and testing of biodegradable active films with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Elena Domínguez Solera, Researcher in the Department of Sustainability and Industrial Recovery at AIMPLAS, will explain the association’s testing of biodegradability of plastics, reviewing some of the methodologies and environments used. Emmanuelle Brendlé from Intertek will close the conference with an analytical view of recycled polymers.

Colour quality and material appearance will be addressed by X-Rite Europe

About the conference Polymer Testing & Analysis 2017, which takes place in Cologne in Germany on 4-5 April 2017, will provide a unique forum in which to explore the latest innovations and challenges involved in the testing and characterisation of plastics.
