news Clariant to expand medical plastics

Clariant is to expand its pre-coloured medical plastics compounds production capacity at Lewiston, in Maine in the US, to satisfy growing demand for the products, which it supplies under the Mevopur name.

The investment will see the company

install a new compounding line built around a 70mm extruder with a complete materials handling system that will be able to produce batch sizes of 3-6 tonnes at high throughput rates. It is due to be on stream in the final quarter of this year. Production will focus on polyolefins,

ABS, polycarbonate and its alloys, plus speciality resins including thermoplastic polyurethanes and cyclic olefins. The new line complements existing equipment and plant investments at Lewiston for compounding engineering resins and high temperature polymers and, most recently, a special installation for processing fluoropolymers.

Clariant said it is plugging a gap in the

market left by producers that are curtail- ing small volume production. While the use of masterbatch is increasingly common in the healthcare market, the company said some processors still prefer pre-coloured compounds for ease of handling or specific technical reasons. l Separately, Clariant recently announced the 12th

edition of its annual colour

The Lewiston facility is one of three

Clariant facilities producing materials for medical devices and pharmaceutical packaging. The other two are at Malmö in Sweden and Singapore, which typically produce lot sizes of 25 kg to 2.5 tonnes. The Singapore site is also currently being expanded to handle increasing demand for colour compounds.

Polykemi invests in R&D

Sweden’s Polykemi has announced an investment in its R&D capabilities, dividing its R&D team at Ystad to create two separate teams, one focused on new materials and development projects and the other on sample material production. The company says the move is intended to speed its ability

to deliver material samples to customers while ensuring its R&D team can focus on new development and innovation. The restructuring also includes investment in a new extrusion line optimised for series production of smaller volumes on short lead times, a 150 tonne injection moulding machine, and fast-operating

vacuum drying technology. The company has also acquired new tooling for production of standardised test specimens and test plaques. “We hope for a more efficient and successful development work of both internal and external develop- ment departments. All improvements should lead to many new businesses and a maintained leading position within the compounding industry,” said Karl Banke, who leads the new internal development department. ❙ www.polykemi.se

forecast for plastics. ColorForward 2018 lays out a somewhat gloomy palette, predicting colours will be “toned down and a little bit grey but, at the same time, warm, organic and hopeful”. The predic- tion is based on a survey of consumer attitudes, which the company said “reflected an over-arching feeling of sadness, fear and distrust of the conven- tional world”, tempered by a resolve to endure and improve things over time. ❙ www.clariant.com/colorworkswww.clariant.com

RAL picks up design award

The Colorcatch Nano portable colorimeter from RAL Colours has won a German Design Award. The device, which connects to a mobile phone to provide accurate colour measure- ment on the move, was selected for its solid and robust construction, pleasant handling and ease-of-use. The Nano won in the Excellent Product Design category. Winners of the German Design Awards are announced annually at the Ambiente trades show in Frankfurt. ❙ www.ral-colours.com
