10 QUESTIONS WITH... PAUL JAKEWAY
Each month we ask an industry professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Paul Jakeway, Marketing Director UK & Ireland from Deb Group.
merchant industry for most of his life until he retired recently. He was one of the hardest working men I’ve ever seen in action, honest, reliable and based his career on building relationships.
Q1
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
Stacking shelves and collecting trolleys at Kwik-Save supermarkets; a weekend job during my time at college. My first ‘proper’ job was a year-long placement at SSL International, as Group Marketing Assistant for their international teams – working on brands like Durex, Biogel and Scholl.
Q2
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?
At Deb, we provide the products, equipment and know-how that are necessary to implement a structured skin care programme in the workplace. It’s important for companies to have such skin care programmes if they are to avoid the threat of occupational skin disorder, and Facility Managers play a crucial role in making this happen. It’s part of my job to reach out to them as much as possible – and make sure they have all the tools they need to assure that the skin of workers stays both protected and healthy.
Q3
WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY,
DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?
I admired my Dad most of all, he worked in the builders

Q4 Q5
IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT, WHAT CAR
WOULD YOU BUY? A Ferrari of some description, then
I’d give it to my Dad who loves them!
HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
INDUSTRY? All too often, skin care is still seen as a side issue. Yet every year, around 3 million working days are lost due to occupational skin disorders. It is the second most common work-related health problem in Europe. I’m trying to improve the industry by raising awareness of the threat – and by doing all we can to make it as easy as possible for facilities managers to combat it. The best way to do so is a dedicated 3-step programme for skin care, which identifies three crucial moments: using protection cream before work; appropriate hand cleansers after hands become contaminated; and restorative creams at the end of the day.
Q6
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO
BE WHEN YOU WERE
GROWING UP? A footballer; I still hope that someone from the top flight leagues will take a gamble on a 36-year-old with bad ankles.
Q7 Q8
WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND?
Spend time with my wife and sons, run, play football and watch sport.
IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER
PARTY WITH ANY THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE, WITH A FOURTH COOKING AND A FIFTH PROVIDING THE MUSIC, WHO WOULD
THEY BE AND WHY? Winston Churchill for the stories, Frankie Boyle for the humour, Liam & Noel Gallagher for entertainment and Nigella for the cooking.
Q9
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE
FUTURE OF THE FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY? Facilities Management will always be a hugely important industry, and it will be at its most successful, I feel, when it takes a more holistic approach.
Q10
STEPHEN PINHORNE,
UK NATIONAL SALES MANAGER OF TRUVOX INTERNATIONAL LTD. ASKED: WHO WOULD YOU HAVE LIKED TO WORK FOR AT WHAT STAGE IN YOUR
CAREER AND WHY? Apple, when I first got into management and before they launched the iPod.
