WHAT’S NEW? PROOFING NOT POISON

Proofing against pests is the best way the pest control industry can support housing managers and landlords in achieving Shelter's new Living Home Standard.

The housing charity has launched the new standard to help the millions of people in the UK it says are living in conditions that threaten their health and wellbeing.

Its new Living Home Standard takes account of affordability, neighbourhood, decent conditions, stability and space. Shelter says more than four out of 10 homes (43%) are failing to meet the standard.

Shelter says pest control problems, such as rat and mouse infestation, are among the many factors that contribute to housing not achieving the Living Home Standard.

Gulliver Hill, Technical Director of pest proofing specialist SUPERPROOFTM, said: "Mice and rat infestations can become endemic in some areas because pest control measures that include using rodenticides in baiting and trapping are not long-term solutions, and costs rapidly build up.

"They may, at best, supress rodent populations, but they then bounce back when the pest control measures are lifted. Behavioural resistance and resistance to rodenticides in rat and mouse populations make this process worse."

"This is a major frustration for housing associations and private landlords, and their tenants, and is contributing

to pest control problem playing a larger factor in homes not meeting Shelter's Living Home Standard.”

An excellent example of how to get things right is Silvester House in West London. For decades, its 24 flats had suffered endemic mouse infestation problems despite repeated attempts at rodent eradication through traditional methods, such as baiting and trapping.

In a two-week programme of mouse proofing, SUPERPROOFTM identified the root cause of the mouse control problem and put in long-term measures to prevent mice from getting into the two-bed flats.

Adeola Oke, Head of Asset Management at Arhag Housing Association, said: "Since the mouse

Jeff Dewing, Cloudfm’s CEO said: “We are active fundraisers for many charities both locally and nationally. We felt that carrying the Poppy Appeal logo on our fleet of engineers vans was a fitting way of commemorating such an important appeal”.

Cloudfm will also make a donation to the Poppy Appeal for each of its vans featuring the logo.

proofing has been completed, we haven't had another complaint about mice. Given the scale of the problem we faced at Silvester House, this is unprecedented.”

Effective mouse proofing and rat proofing creates a permanent, measurable pest control solution, which aids effective management of housing stock.

Gulliver Hill said: "We are pleased that Shelter has created this Living Home Standard because it encourages social housing managers and private landlords to think harder about the quality and effectiveness of their responses to persistent problems like pest control.”
