that have been approached by the EA, we believe that there are still a significant number of qualifying organisations that have not yet appointed a lead assessor in order to start collecting site-based information required for reporting.
With all the focus on achieving compliance, it is easy to forget that this scheme is about driving energy savings. The ESOS scheme is essentially an opportunity for British businesses to save money. The government has identified that the Net Present Value of the benefits will be in the region of £1.6 billion, so the gains reaped from becoming ESOS compliant far outweigh the initial cost of the assessment.
Regardless of whether businesses qualify for ESOS, we advise that organisations adopt good housekeeping practices and encourage energy-efficient behaviour

within their workforce. Small changes can make the world of difference to the amount of energy consumed - and to business costs. Ensuring the lights are switched off when areas are not in use, setting appropriate temperature controls and maintaining equipment so it operates efficiently are some of the most obvious and basic ways to cut energy consumption.
In addition, replacing or upgrading older machinery and equipment may significantly reduce costs and some initiatives offer attractive paybacks. Newly-agreed proposals to phase out HFC gasses in HVAC equipment and F-Gas regulations will also lead to reduced energy costs over time, as newer, more efficient equipment replaces old equipment. Also, whilst most business can save costs by being a bit more careful, we’d encourage organisations to ensure they’re not paying over the odds for
energy. When seeking quotes, be aware of any hidden charges, fees or commissions, and build those costs into the comparison.
In line with the fact that the EA’s enforcement process is underway, Servest is urging companies that may qualify for ESOS, and have not yet taken action, to contact its energy and compliance division; our team of experts will be able to help business leaders understand if they fall under the legislation and commission surveys to collect the relevant information and prepare the report. Part of the report is to identify opportunities to save energy and hence reduce costs. While many companies will treat this as a tick box requirement, we would suggest that others embrace the opportunities to reduce energy usage and the associated costs.
