WHAT’S NEW? DEEPSTORE GETS

ROYAL APPROVAL The Royal Society has extended its contract with DeepStore to manage almost 4,000 boxes of archives and records for another three years.

The independent science academy of the UK and Commonwealth, which is dedicated to promoting excellence in science, has worked with DeepStore since 2009 and has a variety of items in storage from archival treasures to over 160,000 records and personal papers.

Some of the publications are held in standard storage rooms, with modern records and archive collections in higher specification BS 5454-compliant storage that meets archival standards for temperature and humidity. The Society’s recent operational material is kept for a set period before being securely shredded, whilst archives can be recalled with a week’s notice for use by its researchers.

TOMORROW’S MENT ’S TODAY

Graham Perry, Business Unit Director of iSite, explains how facilities management teams can support the talent retention agenda through the use of Big Data analytics.

Across industries, the need to attract and retain skilled workers is a priority. People are the foundation of any business and in an increasingly competitive market place, businesses are doing all they can to keep talented employees on the payroll – both through financial incentives and by providing added- value benefits that improve an employee’s experience at work.

Keith Moore, Head of Library at The Royal Society, said: “We were looking for cost-effective and reliable off- site storage with conditions suitable for archives and we found the security and environment in the mine excellent.”

Craig Trimby, DeepStore’s Head of Sales, said: “We are delighted The Royal Society has extended its contract with DeepStore to manage their records and archives. Our unique underground facility provides a secure, safe and temperature-controlled environment for all their items and we’re looking forward to continuing our relationship for many more years.”

With employee satisfaction naturally being seen as the domain of HR teams, business leaders don’t always interrogate how other departments can make a positive contribution. There is a clear opportunity, for example, for facilities management teams to add strategic value when it comes to talent retention. This can be achieved through Big Data analytics.

The ‘power of the perk’, from flexible working hours to a free on-site gym, is well-recognised as playing a crucial role in the race to retain talent. That being said, it’s often difficult for management teams to quantify the value of a subtler benefit, such as investing in high- quality refreshment facilities, has on a business and its people. This is where facilities management teams can help.

storage facility from the space left following the extraction of millions of tonnes of rock salt from the mine owned and operated by Compass Minerals. The mine, 150 metres below ground, is ideal for storing documents as it has consistent temperature and humidity levels that meet the specifications of PD 5454. Its storage areas also are naturally free from ultraviolet light, vermin and flooding.

of healthy and hot food, providing an alternative to the usual sugary snacks, are becoming increasingly common in many workplaces, and it’s often the facilities management team that manages these services.

With the increasing prevalence of smart vending machines, that are able to instantly track stock levels, product preferences and peak usage times, facilities management teams have a new data set at their fingertips. By integrating this data into building intelligence software that also tracks information from other areas of the business, such as how many people are in the office on a set day and employee satisfaction levels, employers are able to continually monitor, and if needed enhance, the service they provide.

When viewed as a whole, this information has the power to enable much more strategic decision- making as management teams are able to flex resource and investment to ensure they’re providing their employees with what they want, when they want it.
