on UV protection is not a one-off event; it is a constant conversation. Regular presentations or staff meetings can help to keep it going, while posters or freely available leaflets and brochures are a good way to raise awareness on a day-to-day level.


Help and guidance for companies to incorporate UV protection is widely available. The skin cancer charity Skcin, for example, offers a dedicated accreditation scheme, which gives employers access to a comprehensive range of free resources to help educate their employees on all aspects of skin cancer prevention and early detection. Skcin advises companies to conduct a detailed internal risk assessment first, and then implement protection measures. A proper training programme is crucial, says the charity. Ideally, all this should then be formalised into a fully-fledged Sun Protection Policy.


The health benefits from better UV protection in the workplace are obvious. According to IOSH, 90% of skin cancers could be prevented if exposure to UV rays were controlled. This alone should encourage companies to take UV education and training seriously. But costs are another aspect to keep in mind: as the HSE points out, employees affected by skin cancer can be an enormous burden for employers, who could be left with sickness, absence, recruitment, training and compensation expenses.


The effort and money employers need to put into the establishment of a UV education and training programme are minimal – compared to what both employers and employees would gain from such a programme. Using the help and guidance provided by organisations dedicated to the issue, companies can take confident steps towards the ultimate aim: making UV protection in the workplace as natural as putting on sun cream before heading to the beach on your summer holiday.
