WHAT’S NEW? HARRISON WIPES®

CELEBRATES 125 YEARS Experts in Wiping since 1891

Family owned company Harrison Wipes®

officially celebrated its 125th

anniversary on Wednesday 15th June at a party that included current and former employees, suppliers and local dignitaries including the Mayor of Havering, Cllr Philippa Crowder.

“We’re incredibly proud to celebrate 125 years in business,” said owner and Managing Director, Stephen Harrison. “The party made it possible for us to say thank you to our employees, without whom our success would not be possible.”

Established in 1891 in Great Yarmouth by the present owner’s great grandfather, Saul Harrison, the company is respected as one of the long established and most knowledgeable suppliers of wipes and wiping solutions in the UK.

“When my great grandfather founded this business he put our customers at the heart of all we do,” explained Stephen. “We have always remained true to this. We have probably the most comprehensive range of wipes in the UK. We are the sole UK licensed converter of Sontara® distributor of Chicopee®

and the main products as

a direct result of our determination to meet customer needs. We can find the right solution, almost whatever the wiping requirement.”

From a small venture trading recyclable materials including rags, scrap metal and ropes, the business grew into a UK national company manufacturing more than 300 million wipes a year from its premises in the Harold Hill industrial estate.

In the 1930s, the rapidly growing business moved to London and settled in Stratford.

When Saul Harrison died, his four sons continued to develop the company, taking it from strength to strength by expanding into manufacturing wipes and investing into new technologies.

Harrison Wipes® moved from

Stratford to Hackney, where it celebrated 100 years of trading, before moving on to Havering in 2002.

16 | TOMORROW’S FM TOOLBOX TALKS WITH

A DOSE OF FUN TC Facilities Management (TCFM) strive to deliver operational excellence with new animated character to encourage training.

This choice was built on years of research that points to cartoons being able to help people both engage with and remember what’s on screen. And so, an animated character, affectionately called “TC”, has been introduced. A knowledgeable chap, he along with some his friends are hosting a series of short and easily accessible “Toolbox Talks”, bringing a serious message but with a dose of fun.

Peter Clay, Training and Development Manager at TC Facilities Management said: “We saw this as a simple and fun way of communicating to our staff some really important health and safety points about the one best way of carrying out a task or duty”.

He went on: “Animation allows us to get our message over in a more engaging fashion as well as capturing the attention of the viewer. These skill-based videos only last a few minutes and enable us to reinforce training previously undertaken as well as acting as a valuable reminder on our company policy and procedures”

In addition to this and to underpin our training further access to all our training material is available through our company intranet. This ranges from our own formal training documentation through to video “how to” clips on equipment daily maintenance. We have also provided access to over 150 short on-line learning modules; again covering every aspect of the business, people management and legislative and mandatory policy programmes centring on specific Health & Safety training.

These all form part of the overall training programme which includes:

• Apprenticeship programmes

• Reach – a development programme for new or junior level managers. This programme provides an opportunity to attain Level 3 ILM qualifications.

• Pertino - for more experienced and senior managers looking to attain a Level 5 ILM qualification.

In addition, TC people are encouraged to access more specific FM related training programmes through the BIFM Direct platform. This enables TCFM managers to further develop their skills and knowledge as well as attaining nationally and professionally recognised FM qualifications.

The recent move to the new Harold

Hill premises has enabled Harrison Wipes®
