10 QUESTIONS

10 QUESTIONS WITH... STEPHEN PEAL

Each month we ask an industry professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Stephen Peal, Director from PPSPower.

Q5

Q1 Q2

Q3 Q4

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

My first full time job was in the Armed Forces working on telecommunications.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES

MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?

I joined PPSPower in a sales capacity over four years ago. As the company grew, my responsibilities increased and I started to oversee and drive more departments.

WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY,

DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?

I admire the drive, determination and ethics shown by entrepreneurs such as Richard Branson. It's always felt to me that his approach to business is not simply founded on making money, but has a strong focus on making a difference.

IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT, WHAT CAR

WOULD YOU BUY?

I would love a Tesla if I could get over the practicality issues and I’ve always loved Aston Martins but if money is really was no object, the Ferrari F60 is pretty special.

50 | TOMORROW’S FM

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

INDUSTRY? As a supplier to the FM industry I would love to see smarter procurement processes. I know that we offer true value for money alongside an exceptional service level. There isn’t enough focus on true lifecycle contract costs or innovation in cost savings and environmental solutions.

Q6

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO

BE WHEN YOU WERE

GROWING UP? An actor. From the age of three I was always in a show. Everyone thought that was the direction my life would take.

Q7 Q8

WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND?

I’m a family man so most of my spare time is spent on family activities. I help to coach an under 7’s football team, I keep fit (I have completed two marathons) and I enjoy a good action film.

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER

PARTY WITH ANY THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE, WITH A FOURTH COOKING AND A FIFTH PROVIDING THE MUSIC, WHO WOULD

THEY BE AND WHY? So the guests would be Bill Nicholson, this guy is an absolute

legend in the world of football with one of greatest quotes ever – “It is better to fail aiming high than to succeed aiming low.” The next guest would be Ricky Gervais for his comedy genius. Lastly I’d invite Barack Obama especially now that he has so much spare time on his hands, can I invite his wife as well because I feel she would be equally as interesting?

Food provided by Gino D’Acampo, I love Italian food and he would also add to the jovial ambiance. Music by Jason Mraz!

Q9

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE

FUTURE OF THE FACILITIES

MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY? Technology will play a big part in the future of FM. I know it is already playing a big part but I feel monitoring systems and planning tools will develop and integrate better with supplier’s systems.

Q10

JONATHAN OLDFIELD,

MANAGING DIRECTOR FROM RIVERSIDE WASTE MACHINERY ASKED: WHAT INDUSTRY DO YOU WISH BETTER UNDERSTOOD THE ROLE

OF A FACILITIES MANAGER? I suspect there are a lot of industries that still do not truly understand the role of a Facility Manager but I would look at that positively; as an FM if you are going unnoticed you are probably doing a great job.
