TRAINING & CPD

A FUN WAY OF LEARNING

Jay Cullen and Charlie Franklyn are two of the Regional Training Managers at TC Facilities Management (TCFM). Here, they discuss

what it’s like being part of one of the UK’s largest privately owned soft FM services companies.

Jay joined TCFM in October 2016 from a leading vehicle glass repair and replacement company where he was National Technical Training Manager. Charlie joined TCFM in September, from Serco where he was a Driver/Support Trainer. Their roles as Regional Training Managers are to ensure that training requirements are met throughout each region, delivering Induction and mandatory training to In-Store Managers, Area Managers and Distribution Centre Managers.

They and the others in the seven- strong team, are responsible for delivering the TCFM training and development programme developed by Peter Clay, Learning & Development Manager at TCFM.

The programme is delivered to the 6,500 staff who provide services to over 5,500 sites across the UK.

The training programme provided to its operatives and security officers covers a broad range of

topics. From initial induction that introduces staff to the heritage of the family-owned business to bespoke on-site training plans developed for each staff member, each person is taken on a journey of development that maximises their skills and abilities to deliver the customer experience their clients are looking for.

“THE TOOL BOX TALKS VIDEOS HAVE BEEN SELECTED AS A FINALIST IN THE

TOMORROW’S FM AWARDS 2017.”

To achieve this, a variety of resources are deployed that utilise well accepted approaches to Learning and Development. These resources including more formal induction and management training of Area and Site Managers along with less formal

on-site induction and training or 1:1 coaching sessions contribute towards providing the best possible training in to an array of environments.

Investment into a variety of technologies over the last 18 months has seen the introduction of phablets and tablets to support a wide range of operational activities at each site. From a training perspective, this has enabled access to the company Intranet giving entry to a heap of materials including, amongst other things; site specific induction materials, training manuals, online courses, equipment training videos and not forgetting the Tool Box Talks videos that have been selected as a finalist in the Tomorrow’s FM awards 2017.

These were developed to find engaging ways to communicate with staff to ensure information is read and remembered. It was selected after considering a number of possible routes, before finally choosing an animated approach,
