10 Questions with... Aneysha Minocha

Each month we ask an industry professional the Tomorrow’s Energy

Management 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Aneysha Minocha, Energy Services Director, ISS Technical Services.

Q1

What was your first job? I had two key ‘first’ jobs,

both instrumental in my career progression. As a student, I worked for an architecture firm where I gained a holistic understanding of our built environment. My first ‘proper’ job was as Energy and Environmental Analyst for the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR).

Q2 Q3

How did you get into the Energy

Management industry? Whilst studying advanced energy in buildings in my MSc in Architecture, I worked on a three-month contract to set up an energy management system at the DETR. I initially joined in a part- time capacity and was so keen, I was asked to become full-time.

Who, in any other industry, do you

most admire? I truly admire Anita Roddick, founder of The Body Shop, for setting up a genuinely sustainable venture which was a success in terms of business and community support, and Steve Jobs who helped to take tech from perceived geekdom, to beauty and desirability. Both have left big shoes for innovators to fill.

Q4 Q5

What would you do if you won the lottery?

I’d take a short break to celebrate with and look after my family. I’d travel and do volunteer work for my favourite projects. Then back to work to continue to develop our ability to manage and live sustainable lives!

How would you improve the Energy

Management industry? Overall, improve the existing mind- set around energy management.

Short-term thinking is often a blocker, but we have the technology, finance and expertise to drive the required step-change. For example, to assist clients in reducing consumption and costs, ISS developed EMAP, the unique integration platform that links energy, engineering and building controls systems.

We need a more strategic, long-term approach to facilities and energy management. Essentially, it’s the challenge of managing our essential, finite resources more effectively to benefit long-term requirements for ourselves, clients and community.

Some organisations we take inspiration from are ‘horizon’ thinkers like Disney with their strategic focus on service excellence.

Q6 Q7

If you could give your younger self one piece

of advice, what would it be? Plenty! Do another degree; do more work in property development; be more adventurous; travel more. We could all benefit from different advice at different times in our lives.

What do you do to unwind?

I play golf and paraglide. Paragliding is non-motorised and as close as possible to natural flight.

Q8 Q9

What three tracks would appear on your

ultimate playlist? It’s whatever the moment requires! This week:

• Eye of the tiger – Survivor • Simply the best – Tina Turner • Enjoy the silence – Depeche mode

Next week, who knows!

What do you think is the future of the Energy

Management industry? From a business perspective, I think we’ll see consolidation in energy management. The current players range from FM/Real Estate, through to retailers.

Looking ahead we’ll need an integrated model where we provide strategy, delivery and operational services. Energy efficiency and carbon reduction would be integral to the way we do business.

Q10

Editor Rebekah Thompson asks:

What is your company doing to ensure it is ready for the ESOS

compliance deadline? ISS is in the process of gaining certification to ISO50001 as the route to achieving compliance with ESOS. This will provide us with the framework and foundation to drive energy efficiency and carbon reduction on a continuous basis and exceed the compliance requirements. We can then share Best Practice with our clients.
