Don’t Undervalue the Opportunity in Compliance

ESOS requires all businesses employing 250 or more people, or have an annual turnover in excess of €50 million (£38,937,777) and an annual balance sheet total in excess of €43 million (£33,486,489), to produce a detailed report of their energy usage. The alternative is to risk being fined a lump sum of £50,000 and/or £500 for each day the business remains non-compliant.
Despite improved efforts to increase awareness of the upcoming deadline,

which was initially 5th December, with the majority of the 14,000 companies involved in the scheme now aware of ESOS regulations, a large percentage of the companies who are affected have yet to act.
As a result, the Environment Agency has announced it won’t be taking any enforcement action for late notification until the end of January 2016. By the 5th December, businesses must have started to work on ESOS and must let regulators
know that their business will be submitting its energy report by the extended deadline.
The action being taken by businesses is improving. According to recent government research over half (56%) of those obligated to participate in ESOS have already begun to do so, with 94% of these companies confident they will meet the impending deadline.
