that many companies have not yet started the auditing process and therefore could face sanctions for non-compliance.

This surprisingly high number of companies yet to address the mandatory scheme is magnified by the fact that there are less than 40 ESOS assessors in the entire of the UK, and no more assessors will be qualified this year before the deadline. This means that those businesses that still need to comply for ESOS are in serious danger of missing the deadline, and as a result being fined, as well as ‘named and shamed’.

There are a number of things that companies can do to ensure they are putting energy savings and ESOS at the forefront of their business activities, including implementing an energy management strategy.

An Opportunity Very often companies see Government schemes as a burden, but the ‘Opportunity’ associated with ESOS should not be underestimated. In fact according to government estimates the scheme could help

In order to feel the full benefits of the scheme, you must have a strong understanding of your energy consumption. The best way to do this is by completing an energy survey, which uses smart meters and the latest energy management platforms to highlight the energy your business consumes and identify where savings can be made. Companies like Utility Team work closely with UK businesses to assess their energy usage and measure the effectiveness of any energy efficiency measures already in place. Using this information, we can help to produce an energy management strategy that can be used to identify short, medium and long-term energy saving goals.

Once implemented, an energy management strategy needs to be constantly monitored to maximise savings. One way to do this is by making use of energy monitoring software, with reporting capabilities including the generation of multi- site league tables, statements and bespoke reports, as well as data analysis, Automatic Meter Reading (AMR), carbon alarms, invoice validation, tenant billing and market intelligence. These reports not only provide the data necessary to comply with the ESOS scheme, but also give you the information needed to identify potential energy savings.

Energy software can gather data from any smart meter, regardless of who owns the meter or who supplies the energy, and then display and analyse figures. These platforms are easy to install and can be tied in with any existing Building Management System,

saving on expensive retrofitting and labour costs. They are functional almost immediately, so energy can be monitored from day one.

These energy management platforms can also help to improve relationships with your local utility provider. The platforms can decrease power consumption during peak times, reducing the pressure on utility providers during high demand periods thus lowering energy bills in the process and helping to avoid any potential additional charges.

Act fast Despite the Environment Agency’s recent announcement that it won’t take enforcement action on organisations that submit an ESOS notification of compliance by 29th January, provided they have notified of late submission ahead of the 5th December deadline, companies are still being encouraged to work towards the original target date. As a result it has never been more important for businesses to act, not only to ensure compliance but also to take advantage of the savings on offer – the key principle of the scheme.

“Companies are still being encouraged to work towards the original target date.”

For companies to make the most of the ESOS scheme they must act fast. By employing energy management strategies businesses can ensure regulatory compliance, whilst offering significant reductions in energy use. With the assistance of independent energy consultants, it is now possible for companies to achieve savings and reduce their emissions far beyond what they could have ever imagined.

At Utility Team, we have several years of experience in helping businesses to comply with the latest government initiatives and can guide you every step of the way to meeting ESOS requirements.
