Powering Ahead in a Transforming Industry

Bowers Electricals has been in the transformer manufacturing business for nearly 70 years but in the past decade the industry and the products the company makes have changed to an almost unrecognisable degree.

Managing Director Michael Bowers explains how staying ahead of the game has not only led his team to work as advisors to a number of government regulatory boards, but to them showcasing one of the world’s most efficient transformers – the Eco BEST range – at EMEX.

Concern about climate change, an ever-increasing need for more electricity and drastic changes in the way we generate the power supplies we so desperately require, has meant everyone needs to take a smarter approach to energy efficiency.

As fossil fuels decline, eight of Britain’s nuclear reactors are in the process of being decommissioned, reducing our power-generating capacity by 14GW by 2025. Soon, we’ll be forced to rely on other countries to fill the gap between our power generation capability and our power consumption – a thought that concerns me almost as much as the threat of disruptions to our power supplies. Have you ever stopped to imagine how a blackout would affect your business – or how you, at company level, can help with the problem?

Long-term strategy

The current economic situation means that investment required in future electricity generation is very slow and could conceivably mean that we are forced into building the fastest available solution instead of taking a long-term view of what will be the most sustainable and cost- effective energy technology. These are long-term Government strategies and projects that will evolve over the next 30 years and in the meantime, everyone – all the way from heads of governments to end-users operating their supermarkets, factories, schools, hospitals and power stations – has energy efficiency at

the forefront of their minds. Power usage and waste is also something that has steered the way Bowers Electricals has conducted business for more than a decade.

Compact solution

“As fossil fuels decline eight of Britain’s

nuclear reactors are in the process of being decommissioned, reducing our power-

generating capacity by 14GW by 2025.”

On November 11th-12th, my team and I will be at London’s ExCeL to showcase the new flagship product from our British-built transformer range: the Bowers Eco BEST unit. Offering a cost-effective solution to enhanced efficiency for industrial and commercial properties, it is not only a fast track solution but it also offers long term benefits by making these industries more competitive.

Based on the same top-selling BEST unit that uses the highest quality materials available to achieve the lowest losses possible, this highly efficient range is not only fully- compliant with the new Ecodesign legislation but offers even greater savings due to its increased efficiency.

I could go into great technical detail, or tell you how these transformers are built to BS EN600076 standards, up to 20MVA at 33kV, in ONAN, ONAF or OFAF specifications, but what you really need to know is that these units offer tremendous energy savings, in one compact solution that can be built to your specific requirements by men and women who, in many cases, have worked for us all their working lives. What sets us apart from other suppliers of transformers are our in-house capabilities. At Bowers Electricals, we not only design everything in- house, but build the products at our headquarters in Derbyshire where three generations of the family work side-by- side to ensure our customer service standards are up there with our product quality, lead times and prices.

Indeed, because we’re trusted in this industry, we worked alongside the National and European standards bodies responsible for producing the new harmonised transformer standards that came into force this year, and we’re now working as BEAMA members to advise the Government’s National Measurement and Regulation Office (NMRO) on how to assess the efficiency of transformers that fall under the Ecodesign directive. We like to think if they can trust us, our customers can too.

EMEX

We’d like to tell you more about our range – including the new Intellivolt, which incorporates fourth generation voltage optimisation and the ability to track energy savings 24-7 – by inviting you to meet the team, and see our products in the flesh, on stand D41 at Emex.
