The True Cost of Your Brew Break

We hear from Paul Colebrook, Sales Director of Zip Water, about how installing an instant, filtered water system could save your facility time and valuable money.

Nowadays sustainability has become a bit of a buzzword and nearly every organisation has a Corporate Social Responsibility policy in place to reduce its impact on the environment. The importance of sustainable practices is reflected within the industry, with a survey from the British Institute of Facilities Management, which found that 81% of Facilities Managers believe that sustainability is ‘extremely important’ to their organisation.

However, with energy and waste levels moving higher up the corporate agenda, there is increased pressure on businesses to demonstrate their Corporate Social Responsibility and cut energy and waste usage levels further.

All too often the focus is on big changes within a business – although those are effective, the smaller changes should not be overlooked as they too can have a strong impact on the overall ‘green’ performance. One area where significant savings to a businesses’ bottom line can be made is the provision of boiling water to prepare hot beverages. A recent study by www.businesselectric.com, who are experts in energy saving, has revealed that introducing a tea round system to the work place can make significant savings to utility bills over the course of a year. Rising energy prices mean that boiling kettles

several times-a-day can quickly add up, but for a large scale workforce, introducing a tea round system is simply impractical, especially from a time perspective. So what to do?

“Rising energy prices

mean that boiling kettles several times-a-day can quickly add up.”

The leading provider in instant boiling water, Zip Water, has a range of instant water boilers to suit every establishment, such as the Red-E-Boil table mounted boiler and the under counter Zip HydroTap G4 which are both capable of removing any odour, taste of chlorine and lead from drinking water and impurities as tiny as one five-thousandth of a millimetre. Both designed to be as energy-saving as possible, they are far more economical to use than boiling a kettle and quicker too; on average a kettle takes 2.7 minutes to boil - if this happened 20 times-a-day, that’s 54 minutes.

New research has also revealed that 42% of millennial graduates want to work for an organisation that has a positive impact on the world, many rating this factor over receiving a higher salary, which is demonstrating a shift in employees' work ethics. Businesses who choose to ignore

the change could experience serious business ramifications because they are effectively closing themselves off to a new pool of talent.

Adopting sustainable practices within the workplace can also be a great tool to retain employees and increase productivity too, as on average, employees at companies that observe eco-friendly practices are 16% more productive than average employees.

So when we talk about sustainability, it’s not only in the green business sense – it’s also with the view of building a long term, sustainable business. In fact, over 50 global businesses have released reports that switching to sustainable practices has helped them and with global investment bank, Goldman Sachs claiming that companies that are leaders in sustainable, social and good governance policies have 25% higher stock value than their less sustainable competitors, there’s a serious business case for behaving in ways that are more responsible to the planet and to people.

Therefore the savings that can be made from installing an instant filtered water system will ultimately help to protect the bottom line, therefore protecting employees’ jobs and helping to secure a strong business future.
