READING FESTIVAL CAMPAIGNS TO CUT
DOWN ON WASTE As festival season draws to a close, organisers at Reading Festival this year introduced a new campaign in a bid to cut down on the 20 tonnes of reusable camping equipment that gets abandoned at the festival each year.
Results from a recent survey showed that 30% of the festival’s visitors were leaving their tents and camping equipment behind. 79% of these gave the reason that they were ‘too tired’ after the festival had finished to pack away their equipment, while 59% felt that tents and camping paraphernalia were ‘cheap and easily replaceable’.
To combat this wasteful approach, new services were offered to festival- goers this year, including tent cleaning and packing, which was intended to encourage campers to take their equipment home with them once

the festival came to a close on Bank Holiday Monday.
These services were the result of a collaboration between Festival Republic – the festival’s organisers – sustainability non-profit organisation, Julie’s Bicycle, outdoor retailers Blacks, and sustainability consultancy WeAllDesign. It also received £20,000 worth of funding from Innovate UK.
Speaking ahead of the festival, Melvin Benn, Managing Director of Festival Republic, said: “Tackling camp-site waste is an issue we’re extremely focused on changing. This trial at Reading Festival 2015 will see brand- new services available that will aid keeping camping equipment in the long run. We’re excited for the outcome and moving this initiative forward.”
Alison Tickell, CEO of Julie’s Bicycle, added: “Re-thinking our work so that environmental impacts are addressed as a matter of course is not only better for our planet – it’s better for our long term business prospects too. This project
dedicated purely to the toilet, showcasing more than 950 of the most successful and historical porcelain thrones.
The brand’s original toilet was created in 1917, and the company has since grown in popularity thanks to their tech-centric developments such as seat heaters, rinsing methods and timed sensors.

Along with this new initiative, Reading Festival also promoted sustainable travel this year, through a partnership with BlaBlaCar that encouraged car sharing to and from the site. Drivers who offered their empty seats online were offered priority parking, and could even make some money back from those willing to pay for a pick up.
In 2014, the festival recycled 214 tonnes of waste, although 230 tonnes of waste was abandoned by campers.
Earlier this year, Glastonbury Festival – still seen as the industry leader on sustainability – introduced for the first time sustainable toilets, in conjunction with sanitation company ‘Natural Event’, with 1,111 composting toilets across the site.
Reading Festival took place over the August Bank Holiday weekend, and featured performances from Mumford & Sons, Metallica and The Libertines.
The museum, which TOTO hopes will attract two million visitors a year, highlights the historical landmarks that have shaped Japanese bathroom culture, including the move from rural to city living.
The new museum is not connected to the Japanese museum that invites visiting children to wear ‘poo hats’ and slide into a giant toilet bowl.
