Battery-Powered Benefits

The push for higher productivity has left some floor cleaners looking for more efficient methods. Here, Trojan talk up the positives of their battery-powered machines.

A multitude of challenges impact the floor cleaning industry today from reduced budgets and tight schedules, to increased environmental regulations, which increasingly require the use of electrical or battery-powered equipment versus diesel powered machines, which emit noxious fumes.

While use of electrical-powered equipment may avoid the environmental issues presented by diesel power, it still presents the problem of having workers tethered to a power cord which requires the operator waste time plugging and unplugging the equipment throughout their shift. It can also restrict cleaning areas if a power outlet is not close by.

Battery-powered floor machines enable operators to work unencumbered allowing them more mobility to complete their cleaning tasks, resulting in tremendous time and cost savings. Battery-operated floor equipment gives workers the flexibility to clean any area at any time during the day or night, resulting in higher productivity and increased profitability.

The demanding use inherent in floor machine applications requires powerful, deep-cycle batteries that provide maximum runtime and less downtime for maintenance. Whether they are flooded, AGM or gel types, deep-cycle batteries are the best choice for floor scrubbers and sweepers because they are optimised for the deep discharge and recharge


cycling characteristic of daily floor machine operations.

When selecting a deep-cycle battery, users must first determine the appropriate voltage and connections, which are usually set by the floor machine manufacturer. The floor cleaning equipment manufacturer has designed the floor machine to fit specific battery sizes, so be sure to check the floor machine owner’s manual.

Next, consider capacity rating in minutes or ampere-hours (AH) by referring to the capacity the equipment manufacturer uses as a baseline. However, if the daily demand put on the equipment is more, then a higher capacity battery may be needed, and if it’s less, use of a lower capacity battery is fine. When choosing the right battery for a floor machine, veer on the safe side and oversize a battery for capacity. Undersizing a battery can result in unexpected downtime, while oversizing can only benefit by providing longer operating time.

For equipment which uses flooded batteries, watering is important to overall battery life and operation. Automatic watering systems are available which simplify the process of watering batteries, which can sometimes be a time-consuming messy job.
