COMMERCIAL LAUNDRY
Out With The Old, In With The New
With tight margins only becoming tighter it’s important for laundry operators to ensure they are as cost effective as possible. We hear from Tony Kerr, European Sales and Marketing Director at Xeros, who tells us how going green can help cut costs.
If the recession taught laundry operators one thing, it is the importance of effective and focused cost control.
The commercial laundry world is changing and the need to become more resource efficient is being constantly emphasised but it doesn’t need to be seen as an expensive venture. It’s becoming increasingly evident that the greenest technologies are the most effective and the most cost efficient.
If an organisation is currently using conventional technology, making the switch to more eco-friendly options should be regarded as the next sensible step. Business owners need to compare the costs of using green technology compared with maintaining their current equipment. It’s time to upgrade when you can see it’s going to be more cost effective, taking into account lower energy costs and an increased lifespan and improved reliability of new equipment.
One of the major roadblocks keeping commercial laundry operation owners from moving beyond their old equipment is that they don’t see their high water and energy utility costs as abnormal. For over 60 years, laundry has been done the same way, so there’s a tradition of high utility costs.
In other cases, the cost of the laundry operation might be subsumed in other utility costs, such as a hotel with an in-house laundry operation that only sees the total water utility bill for all water consumption, including guest

rooms, the pool and landscaping to name but a few.
The best way past this obstacle is to take a close look at your laundry operation and assess exactly how much water, energy, and chemical is being consumed each month to run it. With the hard numbers for how much your laundry operation consumes in terms of water, energy, chemicals and maintenance you can begin to put a figure on the monthly cost of a laundry operation.
One method of reducing these costs is to take advantage of new highly efficient laundry systems which deliver cost savings whilst maintaining a superior cleaning performance.
Great attention has been devoted to the significant environmental benefits our revolutionary and proven Xeros system generates. The Xeros process involves water being largely replaced by re-usable and recyclable polymer beads, which can be used for hundreds of washes without losing their effectiveness. Compared to conventional washing machines, the Xeros system delivers excellent cleaning and quality while using up to 80% less water and only half as much energy and detergent.
Arguably, the delivery of the most desirable business benefit of all – greatly reduced costs – has been somewhat underplayed.
In comparison to a typical 23kg washing machine for example, the
Xeros laundry process delivers a saving of approximately 1.5m litres of water each year, plus cost reductions of between 30 and 40%. In addition, lower wash temperatures and a gentler washing action mean fabrics stay looking new for longer, enabling businesses or their customers to save money by postponing replacement.
Case Study Xeros Customer Ejaz Osmani, Managing Director of White Rose Laundries, said: “As a business, we’re always looking for new technologies which can help improve our high performance. Reducing our environmental impact is very important to us too.
“We are working hard to ensure we’re an environmentally responsible organisation. For example, we’re continuing to attempt to reduce, and hopefully eliminate, the need for perchloroethylene. We are beginning to communicate our ‘green credentials’ to customers and hope that more consumers will use eco- friendly service providers.”
Mr Osmani said: “Although cost savings and reducing our environmental impact is important, it’s vital that we still deliver superior cleaning for our customers. With the Xeros system, we’ve found that clothes smell fresher and shirts are easier to finish, with less touching up required.”
