EDITOR’S PICK
This move into the cleaning and hygiene sector began with JBL’s Nilco range, but adding Premiere to its ranks allows the company to make proper inroads into the industry, thanks to Premiere’s already existing relationships, as Tim explained.
“The fantastic thing about Premiere is that it adds to our knowledge of and understanding of that sector, but in complementary channels – they go into the market through different channels and a different customer base, so there’s a perfect fit from that standpoint.
“One of the big growth areas for James Briggs is the international business, and we’ve had a lot of very strong success in the past 12 months in growing our international footprint, and Premiere absolutely fitted with that as well, as it’s got very strong international relationships in the Far and Middle East, and in the European market.”
Now that the first year of post- acquisition life is over, and Premiere has got its feet firmly under the JBL table, what does the future hold? While there are plans in place to expand the Premiere production line, if not quite to the scale of their massive WD40 line (if you’ve ever bought a bottle of WD40, chances are it came from JBL’s Chadderton site), the site is currently producing around 50,000 litres of product a day – around quarter of a million a week – which is already a substantial increase on Premiere’s Cheltenham operations, which produced around 70-80 thousand litres a week.
Instead, growth will be aimed externally, in terms of the markets, customers and sectors, as Tim explained. “The key thing now and for the next 12 months is building on what’s been done in the past year, so there’s an element of focus in terms of production operations, but it’s particularly on the external side of things.
“We’ve got to be reasonably vague and euphemistic about this, but we’ve got in process at the moment a number of very exciting, interesting opportunities to grow the business in some new countries and markets with Premiere that we haven’t had before.”

“It is exciting, and
what’s fantastic about it is that we’ve got a
group of people in the business, who have
actually been enthused about Premiere coming on board.”
“We’ll build on the foundation that’s now in place, and it will go from strength to strength,” Quil added.
Tim continued: “It’s great because Briggs has got some connections with people in some interesting parts of the world, in the Asian and Indian markets and into the Far East, who have been looking for products like Premiere. They’ve not had access to them before so we’re brokering some of those discussions, and that could be everything from a direct sale through to licensing in those markets, which is a big step up for the business.”
So the future is definitely looking bright for both Premiere and James Briggs Ltd in the post-acquisition future, and who knows, another year down the line, we could be looking back on some considerable, worldwide growth for the chemical manufacturers.
It’s a plan that has got everyone at the company excited, as Tim said: “It is exciting, and what’s fantastic about it is that we’ve got a group of people in the business, who have actually been enthused about Premiere coming on board.
“It’s important that someone like me has a level of excitement about what we’re doing, but what really makes it work is the likes of Quil and the guys on the warehouse floor and the manufacturing lines, because it’s the quality of the product and the way it’s produced, that’s what makes it happen. And there’s been quite a buzz around making all that come together.”
And Quil believes that this excitement, this passion that the whole company are putting into their work, is a sure fire way to help them push on and make the deal a success. She said: “The guys here have a huge passion for what we’re doing. They were passionate in Cheltenham and there is equal passion now with the family here at JBL. They’re equally determined to make sure that Premiere succeeds in what it does – they’ve almost taken it personally – and that’s phenomenal for us.”
So 12 months on, it’s very much happy families for JBL and Premiere.
