THE CUBE OF CALM
Being in hospital can be an unpleasant and anxious experience for anyone, especially children. This is why GestureTek has created an interactive floor to keep patients entertained and distracted whilst in a healthcare setting.
Imagine an interactive floor that is in sync with each movement, responding to the wave of a hand, the sweep of a foot, or even the wiggle of a finger; allowing users to control the dazzling effects that are projected below. With each step, the water ripples, the fog disperses, or the colourful tiles fly away to reveal a hidden image underneath, as if it was magic! If you still don’t know what we’re talking about yet, it is GestureTek Health’s Cube technology.
The Cube is one of the world’s most advanced gesture-recognition solutions for interactive displays and surfaces, designed to track and respond to even the slightest body movements. The compact Cube is based on GestureTek Health’s patented video gesture-control technology, with advanced tracking that reads the position of the body or feet at all times, allowing for real- time movement and interaction with the displayed graphics. The portable plug-and-play Cube turnkey system can simply be placed on the ground and projected onto any flat surface with scalable display sizes of up to 136” diagonal. With the push of a button, the Cube instantly projects engaging special effects and multimedia games onto any floor. Users interact and control the dynamically changing effects through their gestures and can choose from a variety of single and multi-player games.
The immersive display systems are fun, safe, and hygienic, and are becoming an essential item to healthcare facilities around the world. Popular in medical waiting rooms, pediatric wards, and hospital receptions, this fully-interactive system sparks people’s curiosity, stimulates their senses, and promotes fun social interactions. With over 70 customisable special effects, games, and environments to choose from, the Cube transforms the floor of any healthcare facility into compelling displays, which can be used for creating a soothing, ambient atmosphere that lowers anxiety levels,

Over 250 Cubes have been installed in hospital and healthcare facilities- most notably in top pediatric facilities.
offers an accessible virtual reality play environment; and even those with limited mobility can participate in games that might otherwise be inaccessible.
The Smilezone at Grandview Children’s Centre in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, recently underwent major renovations to brighten and revitalise their main reception area. As part of the renovations, a custom-painted Cube system was installed, reflecting the playful theme adopted by the hospital. The Cube reduces stress and brings high-impact entertainment and interactivity to the reception area, allowing families and patients to play together as they wait their turn to see the doctor.
SHRINERS CHILDREN’S
HOSPITAL At the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, USA, two Cubes project onto the floor of the Activity Rooms at the Child Life Program. With interactive images of jumping jellybeans, falling leaves, splashing ponds of goldfish, and exploding fireworks, the Cube creates a hybrid of creative and engaging activities.
The system is designed to promote movement, alleviate stress, spark children’s natural curiosity, and encourage socialisation. Children can even play against each other in a virtual game of air hockey or soccer. Regardless of age or ability, the Cube
In 2014, SEASPAR (South East Association for Special Parks and Recreation) built Wonders Multi-Sensory Room in Ohio, Illinois, USA, for children with complex cognitive impairments. The award-winning room features the Cube to promote relaxation, multisensory stimulation, and social interaction. While it is known that children can achieve marked improvements to their physical and cognitive abilities through play and having fun, the Cube also provides this in a hygienic, touch free virtual environment that requires minimal space and setup. The Cube provides rehabilitation through play; themed applications can celebrate holidays or teach concepts such as numbers, weather, geography, and animals. The Sensory Room is the first of its kind in the country, creating a state-of-the-art healing environment for kids and families.
The dynamic and flexible Cube instantly creates an immersive experiential environment like never before and is accessible to anyone regardless of age, ability, or mobility. The Cube is not just an interactive flooring system; it creates a whole new atmosphere in any room it is placed and is quickly becoming a staple in healthcare environments worldwide.
