A LASTING IMPRESSION FOR EAST
LONDON SCHOOL Rentokil Specialist Hygiene has teamed up with Rosemary Works School in Hackney to unveil their new, environmentally friendly graffiti removal service, called ‘EcoBlasting’, with a special art project.
The partnership saw the school’s Year 3 children tasked with creating their own self-portraits, before four were chosen to be turned into basic outline stencils (measuring 1m2
were then ‘EcoBlasted’ onto a canal facing wall at the school.
The wall had been subjected to a lot of graffiti in the past, but thanks to Rentokil’s eco-friendly service, it has now been cleaned and all that remains are the images of Dolly, Gowan, Oscar and Matilda (all aged 8).
After the project was completed, Luke Rutterford, Technical Manager at Rentokil Specialist Hygiene, said: “It is widely recognised that graffiti can leave a negative impression for residents, passers-by or customers entering a building, but at the same
NEW-LOOK WEBSITE FOR LOO OF THE YEAR
AWARDS The Loo of the Year Awards has launched a new website which it hopes will be central to its marketing activities but will also be useful to all ‘away-from- home’ toilet providers, the cleaning and FM industry. The new-look site will also be used to promote all aspects of the services and value that the Awards offer. It has been designed to be accessible by desktop computers, laptops, tablets or mobile phones.
Full details of the Awards, judging criteria, entries, events, sponsorship and news items are supplemented by a comprehensive Loo Advice section. This includes toilet design, toilet ratios, best practice, cleaning guidelines and colour coding.

The all-new website also provides information on the Loo Monitor Service, used to monitor performance more frequently than annual entry in the main Loo of the Year Awards and extremely useful in benchmarking trends in supplier performance and identifying areas for improvement. The site also provides a ‘secret shopper’ service, which can be particularly valuable for clients as part of their assessment of the service provided by cleaning or FM companies, and all to the established quality standard of Loo of the Year Awards.
Full details are also provided for an Awards Consultation Service. This provides a unique, independent and unbiased consultation service on a cost effective basis. The service can be used in relation to proposed, new or older toilets and any aspect of toilet provision can be included.
Every consultation is completed by experienced senior managers.
The gallery section includes images of Award winning loos displayed in entry category sections.
Launching the website, the Awards Managing Director Mike Bone said: “The new Loo of the Year Awards website is a major step forward in our evolution. It has been specifically designed to be useful for the industry and not just to promote the LOY Awards. It provides a hub for useful information and covers all aspects of ‘away-from-home’ toilet provision.”

time, its removal needs to be handled in an appropriate way.
“This new EcoBlasting service offers businesses, schools and other organisations a cost-effective and quick solution for removing graffiti from their property in a safe and environmentally friendly way.”

Rob Dell, Head Teacher at Rosemary Works School, added: “It’s a great incentive for our pupils to see that their work can be turned into permanent pieces of ‘clean’ street art. We hope the many thousands of people that pass by the canal enjoy seeing these portraits as much as we have enjoyed creating them.”
Rentokil Specialist Hygiene’s EcoBlasting service uses compressed air to blast environmentally-friendly abrasives, such as bicarbonate of soda or recycled glass, to remove layers of graffiti. Unlike alternative graffiti cleaning methods, EcoBlasting involves neither corrosive chemicals nor excessive amounts of water, giving it a far smaller environmental footprint. This method, which can also be used for the cleaning of fire and smoke damage, can be used on glass, wood, metal, brick and most stone surfaces, including soft stone, such as limestone, which would be eroded by acidic cleaner.
