The preparation of the boric acid receiving solution for colorimetric titration has never been so easy thanks to the Velp Scientifica VreceiverTM. During the Kjeldahl distillation process, the ammonia content is condensed and collected in a boric acid solution to avoid loss of gaseous NH3. The latest addition to the Thomas Cain range of sample preparation equipment, the DEENA II from Seal Analytical, is finding global success in environmental laboratories because automation saves time and money, improves safety and lowers the risk of human error. “These benefits appeal to the managers of every laboratory in every country,” said Seal President, Stuart Smith. “So there has been a high demand for these instruments in labs with a regular requirement for the analysis of metals.”
The DEENA ll is a sample digestion system that fully automates the digestion process ensuring that each sample is treated exactly the same. Pre-programmed, but customisable software manages accurate dispensing of small volumes of reagents into sample tubes, ensuring thorough mixing, correct heating, and filling to a prescribed volume once digestion is completed. The intuitive DEENA software also enables overnight digestions.
A variety of models are available, ranging from a 96 position block for 15ml tubes, to a 30 position block for 50ml tubes. An auto syringe accessory is also available which accurately dispenses standards and automatically spikes samples.

Trans Instruments is pleased to announce the addition of the new HM3070 AquaCombo meter, which simultaneously measures fundamental water parameters - namely pH, Dissolved Oxygen, Conductivity or Salinity, and Temperature.
The HM3070 AquaCombo meter is specially designed for full portability, simplicity and ease of use which meets general environmental measurements. With a pH range of 2 to 12pH at a resolution of 0.1, Conductivity of up to 69mS, salinity up to 42ppt, Dissolved Oxygen level up to 30ppm and temperature of 0 to 60°C, the meter is ideally suited to aquaculture monitoring, open or closed water systems, environmental water checks, waste water control etc.
Calibration is made simple with 3 point buffer recognition calibration for pH, single point calibration at a preferred Conductivity range and in-air calibration for Dissolved Oxygen.
This meter is robust and rugged with a waterproof rating at IP67 for usage in hash weather conditions. A regular 1 meter cable probe for pH and conductivity and a 3 meter cable probe for DO will meet most measuring situations. The meter is able to store up to 99 data points in its memory. For over 30 years PS Analytical (PSA) has been at the forefront of trace mercury (Hg) determinations from environmental samples. Understanding the fate and transportation of Hg is vitally
important and this requires accurate analytical measurements.
Hg, from natural and anthropogenic sources, cycles between land, air and water. When atmospheric Hg enters the water column it can be converted to methylmercury by microbial activity and subsequently bio-accumulated by fish and other aquatic species.
The toxicological effects of Hg have long been realised and recently has there has been an international effort to reduce Hg emissions. Effective control and reduction of Hg emissions is the ultimate aim and these efforts, all of which need to be accurately monitored.
PSA employs Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometry (AFS) to determine Hg and also offers online Hg analysers to monitor mercury emitted from industrial sources.
Employing AFS has many advantages for Hg determinations. These include; sub ngL-1 limits of detection, a linear response over several orders and minimised interferences from other matrix components. PSA’s unique flow cell design, removing troublesome glass or quartz material, results in reduced carryover for faster throughput.
