MARINA VISIT

Itämeren Portti, Finland W

hat is said to be the best-known marina in Finland, Itämeren Portti,

at the small town of Hanko on the Southernmost tip of Finland 130 km West of Helsinki, is called the ‘Gate to the Baltic’. The 320-berth facility has been completely rebuilt in recent years, a task that included the removal of a small island and the installation of a fixed breakwater. It is now equipped with Marinetek pontoons and finger piers serviced by Rolec pedestals. Construction was carried out

in three phases between 2013-15 in order to boost berth numbers and cater for vessels up to 25 m

in length. The finished result has helped to reduce a waiting list for berths at the marina, which is popular with Finland’s jet set due to its stunning location. It is a boater’s paradise and the favoured Summer vacation spot for the rich and famous, who are attracted to its breath-taking views of open water studded with islands, long sandy beaches, high class restaurants and a nearby golf course. Finnish marina construction

group Marinetek supplied a number of products from its extensive range, including heavy duty pontoons, superyacht moorings and finger piers. UK-based Rolec Services provided a large number of

electricity and water pedestals at the facility, including 1000 mm Classic Pedestals, which feature IP-certified polished stainless steel shells, 16 amp or 32 amp single-phase IP44 sockets, lighting and half-inch water taps. Next to Itämeren Portti’s fuel

station is a suction pump-out system for removing toilet waste from the holding tanks of yachts. Shoreside services include

toilets open 24/7 during the Summer season, a laundry room, with washing machines and tumble dryer, and a private sauna for the use of berth-holders that can accommodate up to six people. The marina’s local restaurant, Hangon Portti, is situated

on a little island called Smultrongrundet where the sea is close enough for diners to hear waves splashing and seagulls screaming. Finland’s most Southerly restaurant can serve a sturdy sailor’s breakfast, a light lunch from the daily specials or a full à la carte dinner. It’s also possible to take a meal on board or find a spot to enjoy a picnic on the island from a basket filled with Hangon Portti delicacies, together with a cold beer or a bottle of chilled sparkling wine to celebrate Finland’s endless Summer night!
