CodeWord

rEMEMBEr from 1 April, all forms for nutritional Products listed on the ‘ACBS’ list in the Drug Tariff will be coded using the DM&D unit of measure.

In other words, the quantity is calculated: no. of packs x mls = quantity code.

Products will be coded as mls, gms, etc and not packs. When the gP requests mixed flavours or assorted flavours, you no longer code the item for each flavour dispensed.

The method for claiming the extra fees is also changing. you will now code for the full amount of mls or gms dispensed and use the new code 98765 for the extra fee(s).

The example shows the new and old methods. you will also notice that this method of claiming extra fees is also used for reconstituted liquids

The BSo Codebook has a new layout for April. The information is the same but the layout is different. The BSo Code is now followed by the description and pack size where previously the pack size was included after the BSo Code eg, 8656/200 fortini liquid.

The new DM&D Pack is mls meaning that the quantities will be much

larger. 20 packs of 500 mls will now be coded /10000. BSo have validation rules in place to reject unusual quantities, eg, a part of a pack or a quantity that does not equal a complete number of packs.

In the instance of the 500ml pack example, be sure to check you have used the correct number of zeros. If in this example you inadvertently

coded /1000 (omitting a zero), the validation rules would not be broken because 1000 mls is equal to two packs and you would be underpaid on this occasion.

After coding the prescription, just take a few seconds to ensure you have coded it using the new system and check you have the quantity code correct.

Try to leave yourself enough space to write the quantity clearly. Poor handwriting can lead to a mis-keyed item and an incorrect payment. good luck and happy coding!
