A

fter a quarter of a century at Bessbrook Pharmacy, lorna Brady is well-known for her

dedication to both the company in general and to her work in particular.

lorna’s current position as senior pharmacy technician means her main roles are in the dispensary - dispensing prescriptions, organising and assembling medidose packs, acting as smoking cessation advisor, co-ordinating nursing home scripts and assisting with services, such as minor ailments when needed.

her roles extend into the shop, where she gives advice on oTC medicines and buying and merchandising stock. She also has responsibility for helping train staff who are undergoing their counter medicines assistant course.

lorna began at the pharmacy as a fifteen year old, working on a part- time basis after school. Since then, she has worked her way up to her current role as senior pharmacy technician – gaining her dispensary technician qualification in 1994.

During her ‘journey’, lorna has undertaken many and varied roles - from supervisor, to manager, to delivery driver; basically whatever was needed.

As the pharmacy grew, lorna’s dedication was consistently demonstrated in her willingness and ability to carry out a range of support

roles as needed. Working in a very close-knit community can be challenging at times, but lorna has always been able to maintain a professionalism through all her customer interactions.

She has used her years of experience to get to know the customers and build a great rapport with them. In fact, a lot of people in the community come to lorna as their first port of call.

having worked in a pharmacy for so long, lorna has seen community pharmacy go through many changes.

rather than viewing these changes as challenges, she has chosen to embrace them and take them in her stride; directing patients to the pharmacist for new service like MUrs; advising receptionists on minor ailment referrals, and making patients aware of nhS campaigns, such as Choose Well.

By making patients aware of the over- usage of antibiotics, lorna has acted as a great ambassador for the pharmacy, and being so willing to adapt to the changing face of community pharmacy has been of great benefit and strength to the pharmacy team.

lorna takes a particularly keen interest in the smoking cessation scheme and truly excels in her role as a smoking cessation advisor. Being an

ex smoker herself, she understands the struggles faced by this patient group, and so provides extra support beyond what is required to help them through difficult times.

She is so dedicated to the provision of this service that she often provides advice and motivation to patients during her lunch breaks, and focuses on building a strong relationship with those enrolled in the scheme.

lorna’s dedication to the smoking cessation scheme has led to the pharmacy achieving its highest ever quit rate at 83 per cent!

lorna uses the fact that she has two young children as a bonding opportunity with her customers.

The pharmacy has designated her as the early childhood customer point of contact and she is always on hand to give out advice regarding infant formulas and common childhood complaints and illnesses.

lorna is responsible for buying and ordering stock for this area and loves getting feedback from customers on which products to stock.

her oTC advice is extensive and up to date, and she is always willing to share this with other staff, helping them gain their qualifications.

She is an inspiration to other team members, supporting and guiding

them through their oTC courses and product knowledge.

Since the pharmacy is in a community which has a large proportion of young mothers, lorna’s expert advice is invaluable and has increased sales in this area and, as such, lorna holds a very unique and important position in the pharmacy.

Working in an increasingly busy pharmacy, lorna recognised an area in which she could assist - checking repeat prescriptions.

She researched the ACPT qualification and suggested that this was something she would love to take on to help ease the workload.

now recently qualified, her contribution will be invaluable, as it will free up more of the pharmacist's time and improve the service it is currently providing in the pharmacy.

As with many other community pharmacies today, Bessbrook Pharmacy can be both busy and demanding, but lorna remains calm and uses her years of experience to help the team.

She is always willing to help and guide other staff, often staying late and taking work home. her behaviour is a testimony to her dedication to the pharmacy and improving patient care.
