M
adeeha Malak is an enthusiastic, hardworking individual, who is
passionate about pharmacy in general and about community pharmacy in particular. She is very aware of the impact that the pharmacist has on the health and wellbeing of the community that he or she serves.
Although randalstown Pharmacies ltd consists of two stores, Madeeha generally works in the busy Main Street shop, which was one of the in the province to be accredited health Plus Pharmacy.
As such, she and her team deliver a wide variety of services, including helicobacter testing, oxygen delivery, substitute prescribing, blood pressure checks and blood sugar checks. Madeeha is also responsible for medicine management services, asthma and diabetic medicine use reviews, and nursing home supply.
Madeeha currently works as the senior pharmacist within the Main Street Branch and, although she only qualified five years ago, her dedication and ability have allowed her to take on this challenging role, which is more typically that of a more experienced pharmacist.
Madeeha is more than capable of functioning in all aspects of this role, however, and manages both the
workload and other staff efficiently and professionally.
Throughout the years that she has worked in this branch, she has contributed hugely to the team and, in the last number of months in particular, has been a strong factor in the business framework of the pharmacy.
Madeeha’s pharmacy activity isn’t simply limited to the store, however. In november 2015, she joined the UCA as an associate member representative: an aspect of pharmacy, which she has found challenging and interesting.
She was subsequently welcomed onto the Executive Committee and is thoroughly enjoying the opportunities that this has provided for her. Joining the UCA as an associate speaks volumes in terms of Madeeha’s desire to make a change to the future of community pharmacy.
Introducing newly- qualified pharmacists to this realm will, she feels, only lead to fresh ideas and a more positive outcome for patients’ care.
In 2016, Madeeha started her Independent Prescribing (IP) with Dr Susan Sproule and graduated in December 2016. Although she found
it hard work, Madeeha feels it is essential to the role of the future community pharmacist.
Completing her IP will have a huge impact for Madeeha at both an individual and professional level and she is eager to get her theory into practice quickly and potentially start up a clinic with the support of colleagues.
Madeeha has had a very proactive approach to medicine use reviews (MUr) and has been achieving high numbers since the schemes started.
At randalstown she devised a short questionnaire with Elililly to help with the practicalities of carrying out an MUr in a time-efficient manner without compromising on the quality of the service. Madeeha was an important contributor throughout the entire process and her confidence in the project is certainly reflected in her ability to carry out the reviews in an efficient, professional manner.
As a pharmacy, randalstown Pharmacies ltd is very proactive in delivering MUrs and feel they are extremely valuable tool for both the patient and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
Within the company, Madeeha achieved the highest number of MUrSs in 2015. her involvement in the formatting of the diabetic MUr
form gave her the confidence to easily and efficiently complete them and there’s no doubt that this led to improved patient care and impacted on the business through payment.
When it comes to community matters, Madeeha has been very forward- thinking in her approach. her strong, charitable work ethic - both inside and out of work - is a clear indication of her humanitarian beliefs and her desire for an equal quality of life for everyone.
In September 2012, for example, she took part in the UCA abseil for northern Ireland Cancer fund for Children, while, in 2013, she raised £1500 for the victims of the Pakistan flood disaster. She also makes regular trips to france and greece as part of the medical team delivering medical emergency first aid to refugees.
on a local scale Madeeha is well placed to deliver sound and practical advice to the various communities in randalstown.
The pharmacy is located in an area which serves both rural communities and urban housing developments - each with very specific areas of deprivation and Madeeha has been quick to recognise this and tailors her awareness talks to suit her audience.
